In memory of Albert Einstein's annus mirabilis ( 1905 ) and its 50th anniversary the year was 2005 by the International Union of Pure and Applied Physics and the UNESCO to the World Year of Physics explains.

In Germany, the Federal Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF) and the Science in Dialogue Initiative (WiD) organized the Einstein Year .
