The Catholic Basilica of San Marino , which is dedicated to Saint Marinus , stands in the city ​​of San Marino and is the co-cathedral of the diocese of San Marino-Montefeltro , making it the highest church in the state . The church and the entire old town of San Marino have been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 2008 . The basilica is depicted on the San Marine 10 cent coin .

Immediately next to the basilica is the Church of San Pietro (cut off on the right in the picture).

history

The previous building was first mentioned in 530 and had to be demolished in 1807 due to structural damage. According to a decision of the council in 1825, the church was built from 1826 to 1838 in the classical style by the architect Achille Serra and consecrated in 1855 by Bishop Agostinucci Crispino . The construction costs were 40,150 scudi and 76 baiocchi. The church was founded in 1926 by Pope Pius XI. raised to the minor basilica . On August 29, 1982, the basilica was visited by John Paul II , who blessed the relics and the church.

Building description and equipment

At the main portal of the three-aisled church there are two rows with six Corinthian columns each . The Latin inscription Divo is above the pillars . Marino. Patrono. Et. Libertatis. Avctori. Sen. PQ (translation: "Saint Marino, the patron saint who brought freedom. The Senate and the people."). The apse has a semicircular shape. The bell tower was part of the previous building and was built in the 17th century in Romanesque style .

Inside the church there is a statue of St. Marinus by Adamo Tadolini . It forms the center of the altar, under which there is an urn with the relics of St. Marinus found in 1586. Some of the relics were brought to the island of Rab in 1595 . In a reliquary created in 1602 next to the altar, the saint's skull is kept. There are also paintings by students of the artist Titian and an old throne of the Capitani Reggenti . One of the side altars dedicated to Mary Magdalene is adorned with a painting by Elisabetta Sirani from 1777.

The basilica houses an organ that was created in 1835 by the organ builder Giacomo Bazzani . The instrument has a manual mechanism and a shortened pedal. The registers are arranged in two rows to the left and right of the gaming table
