Chiesa di San Francesco

The Chiesa di San Francesco is one of the oldest Roman Catholic churches in the Republic of San Marino . It is located in the historic center on the old city walls of the city of San Marino .

history

The church and the adjoining monastery were built in the middle of the 14th century by order of the Franciscan Minorites ( Ordine dei frati minori conventuali ) and consecrated around 1400. The builders were Longobard builders and stonemasons who were based on Lake Como . The name of the architect, who came from the guild of the Magistri Comacini , is not known. However, symbols, stone carvings and inscriptions on the west wall of the church attest to the origin. During the construction, the Maestri Comacini also used material from the old monastery in the Murata district.

A plaque at the entrance gate indicates in Gothic letters that the church was already under construction in 1361.

The structure was built from sandstone carved into square and rectangular blocks. The portico is covered with three arches. The copper tabernacle is the work of the craftsman Romolo Mulazzani from Rimini . The paintings in honor of Saints Santa Lucia , Santa Anna and Francis of Assisi are by Ciro Parisa and Giovanni Francesco Barbieri . The wooden cross also dates from the 14th century. The altarpiece and the wall and ceiling paintings were created by Antonio Alberti da Ferrara in the first decade of the 15th century. In the cloister is the tomb of Bishop Madroni Marino , who lived in the Minorite monastery in the 15th century.

The interior was restructured in 1790 due to the destruction of the Franciscan complex. During the construction work, the brick rose window that is now located above the entrance was renewed. The church was given its current appearance in 1792.

exhibition

The Museo San Francesco has been located in the former Franciscan monastery adjacent to the chiesa since 1966 . The exhibition consists of two parts: Sacred Art and Art Gallery. The museum houses works from the artistic heritage of the Church of San Marino and the monastery, as well as items from other Franciscan churches and monasteries. The paintings on wood and canvas and valuable frescoes and vestments date from the 14th to 18th centuries. The monastery library is home to various codices , manuscripts and various theological and philosophical writings from the 15th and 16th centuries.
