The current Peruvian license plates were introduced on January 1st, 2010. The signs correspond to the US-American format and show the flag of Peru in the upper left corner . The name of the country appears next to it in capital letters and a hologram sticker appears in the upper right corner . There is also a serial number in the lower left corner. The combination usually consists of a letter, a number and another letter followed by a hyphen and three further numbers. The first letter indicates the department in which the vehicle was registered. The type of vehicle can be recognized from the color of the sign. Private vehicles have white signs, the upper edge of public transport vehicles is yellow ( taxi ), green (city bus) or orange (intercity bus). Signs for trucks and trailers have a yellow background, and two-wheeled signs have a blue background. A small E (for Spanish especial ) in front of the combination marks special indicators such as those used for fire brigade , ambulance (both red) and police (green). Diplomatic license plates have red letters on a white background and show the letters CD .

history

In 1974 white license plates with black letters were introduced. They showed two letters and four digits separated by a period. The first letter indicated the type of vehicle, the second the origin. The nationality symbol PE appeared in the middle above the combination . In 1995 the colors were changed from black to yellow and a third letter was added. Public transport vehicles had signs with a blue background.
