Paraguay's current license plate system was introduced in 1999. The signs are 320 mm × 170 mm in size and have a red frame and red lettering on a white background. On the upper edge is the flag of Paraguay on the left , the national coat of arms on the right and the lettering PARAGUAY in the middle .

The actual label consists of three letters and three digits, which are assigned consecutively and thus do not allow any conclusions to be drawn about the exact origin of the vehicle. However, the approval offices are assigned certain blocks of letters so that there are still indications of the location of the initial approval. For example, blocks Axx and Bxx were mainly issued in the capital Asunción . The letter E is only awarded to exempt enforcement vehicles, tractors obtain license plate starting with T . The letter V is intended for historical vehicles . Number plates for two-wheelers are smaller (200 mm × 130 mm) and show the number pad in front of the letters.

There are also special marks with black letters for persons whose office gives them political immunity . This includes signs beginning with SEN for senators (Senadores), signs with the letters DIP for members of the lower house (Diputados) as well as signs of the elected civic councils at community level ( JM for Junta Municipal) and the PJ signs for judges . Temporary license plates are also written in black. The combination begins with the newest letter, which is its turn, and is printed on paper, which is then attached to the inside of the front and rear windows. However, this is usually not the later officially registered license plate.

The license plates are usually tied to the vehicle. In the event of loss, the owner receives a new sign with an identical combination plus a small red seal between the two blocks. This seal shows the letter D for Duplicato or T for Triplicado if it is already the second replacement label .

From April 2019

In 2014, a uniform license plate for the Mercosur countries, similar to the EU, was presented. It was planned to be introduced in 2016. It should really be introduced from April 2019. As in Europe, the format will be 400 mm × 130 mm. The number system provides 123 ABCDthree digits followed by four letters.
