geography

Fatoto, at 16  m altitude, is located in the Upper River Region (URR), Kantora district and is located about five kilometers southeast of Garowol . In the immediate vicinity, in the direction of Garowol, is the Kusum Forest Park .

The river Gambia has dug its way deep into the sandstone plateau on its upper course , so that up to twelve meters high steep banks have emerged here. The river itself is considered navigable up to here for vehicles up to 1.8 meters draft, which corresponds to about 480 kilometers of river. This is particularly important for transporting the peanut harvest to the seaport in Banjul. The tidal range of the Atlantic is noticeable up to this point.

Gambia's bird life is very extensive, in the vicinity of Fatoto, for example, the red-headed weaver ( Quelea erythrops ), the carmine spint ( Merops nubicus ) and the flame wida ( Euplectes hordeaceus ) have been observed. But the rare brown-coat scissors-beak ( Rynchops flavirostris ) can also be seen occasionally on the banks of the river.

Residents

The place is mainly inhabited by the Fulbe ethnic group , who are generally cattle breeding. There is a small market, a branch of the Gambian Post and the Gambia Telecommunication (Gamtel). There is also a peanut processing company.
