Lower Niumi (spelling variant: Lower Nuimi ) is one of 35 districts - the second highest level of administrative division - in the West African state of Gambia . It is one of six districts in the North Bank Region .

According to a calculation from 2013 about 51,787 inhabitants live there, the result of the last published census of 2003 was 44,491.

history

The name is derived from Niumi , a former small empire.

In 1977, the Niumi District was split up, creating what is now the Lower and Upper Niumi Districts .

geography

The district borders Senegal to the north, Jokadu to the east and Upper Niumi to the southwest.

In Lower Niumi are the Niumi National Park and the Lohen Forest Park .

population

According to a survey from 1993 ( census at the time ), the largest population group is the Wolof with a share of around three-tenths, followed by the Mandinka and the Serer. The distribution in detail: 24.9% Mandinka , 15.5% Fula , 30.7% Wolof , 1.1% Jola , 0.8% Serahule , 21.7% Serer , 0.1% Aku , 1.6 % Manjago , 2% Bambara and 1.6% other ethnic groups.
