Upper Baddibu is one of 35 districts - the second highest level of administrative division - in the West African state of Gambia . It is one of six districts in the North Bank Region .

According to a calculation from 2013 about 51,379 inhabitants live there, the result of the last published census from 2003 was 55,370.

The name is derived from Baddibu , a former small empire.

According to a survey from 1993 (census at the time), the Mandinka represented the largest population group with a share of around four-tenths, followed by the Wolof and the Fula. The distribution in detail: 43% Mandinka , 15.9% Fula , 36.7% Wolof , 0.5% Jola , 0.4% Serahule , 0.5% Serer , 0.1% Aku , 1% Manjago , 1 , 3% Bambara and 0.6% other races.
