Hazel Jenkins

Hazel Gertrude Jenkins (born June 6, 1960 in Ceres , South African Union ) is a South African politician and former Prime Minister of the North Cape Province ( African National Congress , ANC).

Life

Jenkins was born and raised in Ceres. In 1981 she completed a teacher training course at Belville Training College . She then taught in Mitchell's Plain near Cape Town . She was already politically active in her high school days and was a member of the Western Cape Student Organization . She was also involved in the Anglican Church . In 1984 she moved to De Aar and got married there. She has three children.

In 1995 she became a (part-time) councilor in Emthanjeni , the municipality to which De Aar belongs. In 1999 and 2000 she was mayor there . From 2000 to 2003 she was the spokeswoman for the Karoo district (now Pixley Ka Seme ) and in 2003 she became mayor of the district. She held this office until 2009. From 2001 she was vice-chairwoman of SALGA , a body in support of local politics. In 2007 she was elected to the national board of the ANC after she had already taken on other leadership roles for the party. In 2009 she became Prime Minister of the North Cape Province .

In 2012 she suffered a stroke and had to be represented by acting prime ministers. In May 2013 she resigned and was replaced by Sylvia Lucas (also ANC).
