Gianna Angelopoulos-Daskalaki
Gianna Angelopoulos-Daskalaki ( Greek Γιάννα Αγγελοπούλου Δασκαλάκη ; born December 12, 1955 in Heraklion , Crete ) is a Greek former politician and businesswoman.
Life
Angelopoulos-Daskalaki studied law at the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki and was active in the political arena of Athens in the late 1980s . From 1989 to 1990 she was a member of parliament as a member of the conservative Nea Dimokratia .
In 1990, after divorcing her first husband, she married the shipowner and billionaire Theodore Angelopoulos and has been working in his industry since then. Since 1994 she has been the assistant director of the Harvard Kennedy School . In 1998 she was appointed ambassador by the Greek government. The Angelopoulos-Daskalaki family has their official residence in Gstaad , Switzerland .
She became known as the president of the ATHOC Organizing Committee of the XXVIII. 2004 Summer Olympics in Athens. She was named one of the 50 Most Powerful Women by Forbes Magazine . Disappointed at losing the 1996 100 Year Games to Atlanta , she decided to compete for the 2004 Summer Games. She was then officially appointed President of the Organizing Committee and successfully brought the Games to Athens.
She is a respected and popular woman in the Greek public, but is also often criticized for her very strong self-confidence. She is repeatedly traded as the future Prime Minister of Greece. She was also under discussion as the future mayor of Athens until the beginning of 2006, but due to a newspaper article in the Italian newspaper La Repubblica , her chances of a successful candidacy decreased.
