Günther Steffen Henrich

Günther Steffen Henrich (born August 15, 1938 in Vienna ) is a German Neo-Graecist and emeritus professor for Byzantine and Modern Greek Philology at the University of Leipzig .

After attending the Johanneum School of Academics and studying Classical Philology and Modern Greek at the University of Hamburg , which Henrich graduated with the first state examination for teaching in ancient Greek and Latin in 1965, he stayed from 1965 to 1971 for the purpose of writing a dissertation from the field of Middle and Modern Greek grammar in Greece , from 1965 to 1967 at the University of Ioannina , from 1967 to 1971 at the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki . Afterwards Henrich was lecturer for the modern Greek language at the University of Hamburg until 1994. The doctorate took place in 1976, however, at the University of Thessaloniki. Since 1994 he has been Professor of Byzantine and Modern Greek Philology at the University of Leipzig . He has been retired since 2003.

Henrich was secretary of the Working Group of German Byzantinists from 1979 to 1994, and from 1998 to 2002 a member of the board of the European Society for Modern Greek Studies. Since 1988 he has been the deputy chairman of the Working Group for Neo-Greek Studies in the FRG.

Henrich has been married to the philologist Kiriaki Chrisomalli-Henrich (Κυριακή Χρυσομάλλη-Henrich) since 1971 , who in turn is a lecturer in Modern Greek at the University of Kiel .

Henrich works linguistically, in particular on onomastics , metrics , rhyme and lexicography , as well as literary studies on authors and texts from the Byzantine period to the present.
