Melina Kana

Melina Kana ( Greek Μελίνα Κανά , actually Μελίνα Κανατά Melina Kanata , born May 29, 1966 in Thessaloniki ) is a Greek singer . She is the older sister of Lizeta Kalimeri . She completed her philology studies at the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki with an exam.

Melina Kana works with well-known contemporary composers (including Thanasis Papakonstantinou ). Influenced by the music of Thessaloniki, Rembetiko and the folk music of the Balkans, she combines these musical traditions in her work.

During a performance in 1987 Melina Kana met the well-known composer Stavros Kougioumtzis (Σταύρος Κουγιουμτζής) and they began a collaboration. In the summer of 1989 she took part in concerts by Nikos Papazoglou . An artistic collaboration developed from an acquaintance with Sokratis Malamas during this time. In 1990 she performed at concerts by Haris Alexiou and Nikos Xydakis .

Outside of Greece she performed concert tours in the USA (1995 together with Dionysis Savvopoulos ), to Germany (1997 Berlin and Munich, 2000 Cologne WDR Festival, 2002 Berlin, Nuremberg, Stuttgart), to Belgium (1999 SFINKS World Music Festival), Bulgaria (2001 together with Nikos Xydakis in the National Theater of Sofia) and Italy (2002 International Festival of Pavia).
