Dionysis Savvopoulos (2007)

Dionysis Savvopoulos ( Greek Διονύσης Σαββόπουλος , born December 2, 1944 in Thessaloniki ) is a Greek composer, musician and singer.

Savvopoulos is known for combining different styles of music. On the one hand, he combines Rembetiko with Western song forms, on the other hand, Greek ( Macedonian ) folk music with elements of American musicians such as Bob Dylan and Frank Zappa . He has been compared to Bob Dylan for his distinctive voice. But he also writes music for television, film and theater. He writes most of his songs himself, both lyrics and music. He has worked with many well-known musicians, such as Eleftheria Arvanitaki , Alkinoos Ioannidis , Melina Kana and Nikos Papazoglou .

In 1963 he went to Athens, interrupted his law studies in favor of a music career and performed in nightclubs. He soon became a cult figure for the younger generation of the opposition. His politically influenced lyrics were censored and he was imprisoned for his political beliefs in 1967 , which increased his popularity. The album "Ballos" (Μπάλλος) contains a Greek interpretation of Bob Dylan's " All Along the Watchtower " with the title "O Paliatsos ki o Listis" (Ο παλιάτσος κι ο ληστής). The album "Vromiko Psomi" (Βρώμικο Ψωμί / Dirty Bread) is also a classic because of its critical lyrics and the combination of Greek music with music similar to zappa. For two years, until 1974, Pavlos Sidiropoulos worked with Savvopoulos group "Μπουρμπούλια" (Bourboulia). The album "Ο Ντάμης ο Ληστής" (O Damis o Listis) was created, which was released after the military dictatorship under the title "Ο Ντάμης ο Σκληρός" (O Damis o Skliros). 1977 Dionysis Savvopoulos campaigned for the release of imprisoned writers and artists, including Sidiropoulos . He dedicated "Odi sto Georgio Karaiskaki" to Solomos Solomou , a Cypriot who was shot dead by Turkish soldiers in the UN buffer zone of Cyprus on August 14, 1996 .

He was the musical director at the closing ceremony of the 2004 Summer Olympics in Athens.
