Solomon Solomou (Greek Σολομών Σολωμού, * 1970 ; † August 14, 1996 near Famagusta ) was a Greek Cypriot who was shot by Turkish soldiers following a memorial service on August 14, 1996 in front of Famagusta . He is mostly commemorated in Cyprus with his cousin Tassos Isaak, who was murdered shortly before .

Life

Solomou was a displaced person from northern Cyprus . As a participant in a demonstration in memory of his cousin Tassos Isaak , who had been beaten to death by Turkish extremists a few days earlier after he had lost touch with a demonstration group in the buffer zone .

Solomon Solomou left the memorial service around 2:20 p.m. and ran into the Turkish-occupied zone. There, as a protest, he climbed a pole with a Turkish national flag , presumably to bring it down. Snipers from the Turkish army opened fire on Solomou and hit him three times. He died on the spot.

The perpetrators and the investigation

Investigations by the Cypriot police show that the two soldiers Kenan Akın and Erdal Hacıali Emanet fired the shots. Akın has received an arrest warrant from Interpol , which can not be carried out due to a blockade in Turkey . As more managers are Attila Sav (former police chief), Hasan Kundakcı (former Lieutenant General) and Mehmet Karlı called (former Major). The named persons cannot leave Turkey due to international arrest warrants. Those responsible for the shots are still not prosecuted.

On June 24th, 2008 the European Court of Human Rights opened the case “Solomou and others v. Turkey ".
