Helvi Lemmikki Leiviskä (born May 25, 1902 in Helsinki ; † August 12, 1982 there ) was a Finnish composer .

Life

At the later Sibelius Academy in Helsinki she studied piano with Ilmari Hannikainen , composition with Erkki Melartin , in Vienna counterpoint with Arthur Willner and, again in Finland, composition with Leevi Madetoja . She worked as a piano teacher, music critic and from 1933 to 1968 as a librarian at the Sibelius Academy. She made her compositional debut with her piano concerto (1935). After the war she continued her studies with Leo Funtek in Helsinki. Her main works are the symphonies (1947–71). In 1962 she was awarded the Pro Finlandia Medal.

Helvi Leiviskä is considered the first well-known Finnish composer. She composed three symphonies and a Sinfonia brevis , a piano concerto, other orchestral works as well as choral, chamber, piano and film music. Stylistically, it was initially based on the romantic tradition in Bruckner's wake , later it took on influences from neoclassicism and developed further in the direction of a free tonality .

Remarks

  1. Most of the Finnish and English sources name Helsinki as the place of birth and death, the MGG gives Hämeelinna
