Petri Aarnio

Petri Aarnio (* 1965 ) is a Finnish violinist and music teacher.

Life

Petri Aarnio studied at Itä-Helsingin Musiikkiopisto [Helsinki East Music Institute] with the Hungarian violin professor Géza Szilvay (* 1943). At the Sibelius Academy he studied with Lajos Garam (* 1939). From 1984 to 1990 he studied in New York City at the Juilliard School with Dorothy DeLay and Joel Smirnoff, the then head of the violin department at the Juilliard School and later head of the Juillard String Quartet . In 1990 he graduated from there. He played in the Juillard Orchestra and worked with the New York Philharmonic Orchestra and the Metropolitan Opera Orchestra under conductors such as Leonard Bernstein , Seiji Ozawa , Zubin Mehta and James Levine . After his return he played temporarily as assistant concertmaster with the orchestra of the Finnish National Opera FNO. He was concertmaster at the Avanti! Chamber Orchestra and the Finnish Chamber Orchestra. Petri Aarnio has been a member of the Yleisradio Symphony Orchestra since 1991 and its first concertmaster there since 1996. Since 1997 he has been teaching at the Sibelius Academy himself. Since 1991 he has been a member of the Uusi Helsinki -kvartetti UHK [New Helsinki Quartet] and since 2000 principal violinist. In 2019 the quartet will consist of Aarnio, the violinist Taija Angervo, the violist Ilari Angervo and the cellist Tuomas Lehto. All are members of the Yleisradio symphony orchestra. He plays with the pianist Naoko Shibayama and the cellist Erkki Lahesmaa in the Trio Ad Libitum . He has performed as a chamber musician and soloist across Europe, the United States, South America, Japan, China and Egypt. Petri Aarnio plays a violin by Vincenzo Ruggeri (1663–1719) from 1696. He also teaches at Tampere University for applied sciences .

On September 21, 2011, Petri Aarnio played the world premiere of the violin concerto by the Finnish composer Ville Matvejeff (* 1986) with the Yleisradio symphony orchestra under Osmo Vänskä at the Musiikkitalo . On a tour of Russia by the Yleisradio orchestra to mark the 100th anniversary of Finnish independence, Aarnio was the soloist in a performance of Väinö Raitio's double concerto for violin, cello and orchestra in Vyborg . The Yleisradio orchestra played under the direction of Hannu Lintu .

Aarnio's violin students include Pasi Eerikäinen (* 1979), Siljamari Heikinheimo, Leena Jaakkola, and Kirsi-Maj Plunsern geb. Katajmäki, Maija Sinisalo and Johannes Hakulinen.
