Rudolf Schwarz (conductor)

Rudolf Gerhard Schwarz (born April 29, 1905 in Vienna , Austria-Hungary ; died January 30, 1994 in London ) was a British conductor and pianist of Austrian origin.

Schwarz studied music a. a. with Hans Gál in Vienna. From 1923 to 1927 he was répétiteur at the Düsseldorf Opera under George Szell , and from 1927 to 1933 Kapellmeister at the Badisches Landestheater Karlsruhe under Josef Krips . In April 1933 he was released because of his Jewish origins. From 1936 to 1941 Schwarz worked as musical director of the Jewish Cultural Association in Berlin. In 1943 he was deported to the Auschwitz concentration camp , from where he was finally transferred to the Bergen-Belsen concentration camp via the Sachsenhausen concentration camp . In 1945 he was able to leave for Sweden. From 1947 to 1951 he was music director of the Bournemouth Symphony Orchestra , from 1951 to 1957 music director of the City of Birmingham Symphony Orchestra . In 1957 he became chief conductor of the BBC Symphony Orchestra , and in 1967 director of the Northern Sinfonia Newcastle upon Tyne .
