Semyon Majewitsch Bychkov ( Russian Семён Маевич Бычков , scientific. Transliteration Semen Maevič Byčkov , Eng. Transcription Semyon Mayevich Bychkov , pronunciation [sʲɪmʲɵn maɪvʲɪtɕ bɨtɕkof] , * 30th November 1952 in Leningrad , Russian SFSR , Soviet Union ) is a conductor of Soviet origin.

Semyon Bychkov grew up as a child of Jewish parents in Leningrad, where he first attended the Glinka Choir School and then the Leningrad Conservatory . Among other things, Ilya Musin was his teacher there. In 1973 he won the Rachmaninoff Conducting Competition. Because of his political attitude, the planned concert with the Leningrad Philharmonic did not take place . He emigrated to the USA in 1975. From 1980 to 1985 he was director of the Grand Rapids Symphony Orchestra and was also a guest conductor with the Buffalo Philharmonic . He took over the direction of this orchestra in 1985 and held this post until 1989. From 1989 to 1998 he was music director of the Orchester de Paris . This was followed by engagements with the St. Petersburg Philharmonic (1990 to 1994) at the Maggio Musicale Fiorentino (1992 to 1998) and as chief conductor of the Dresden Semperoper (1998 to 2003). From 1997 to June 2010 he was chief conductor of the WDR Symphony Orchestra in Cologne. After already working as a guest conductor with the Czech Philharmonic , he became chief conductor in 2018. He is currently also the owner of the "Günter Wand Conducting Chair" at the BBC Symphony Orchestra .

Semjon Bychkov is married to the pianist Marielle Labèque ; his brother was the conductor Yakov Kreizberg .
