Su-a Lee

Su-a Lee is a South Korean cellist living in Scotland .

Lee studied at the Chethams School of Music and at the Juilliard School (with Harvey Shapiro, among others ). After graduating, she went to Scotland and in 1993 became a member of the Scottish Chamber Orchestra , of which she has been assistant principal cellist for more than 20 years. She undertook international tours with the orchestra and made recordings with musicians such as Charles Mackerras , Alfred Brendel , Robin Ticciati , Joseph Swensen and Alexander Janiczek . She gave a recital at Carnegie Hall with her sister Song-a Lee .

Lee is also active in the field of theater, ballet and film music and works regularly with Scottish jazz and folk musicians. Among other things, she joined the Celtic Connections with Jack Bruce of the group Cream and the folk band Lau on improvised with the Belgian theater company Reckless Sleepers and toured with the sarod master Amjad Ali Khan by India. In 2013 she became a member of the group India Alba , with whom she appeared at the Celtic Connections , the Solas Festival and the Insider Festival .

With the ensemble Mr McFall's Chamber she played avant-garde music for string quartet from 1996, later the repertoire was expanded to include progressive rock , jazz , tango nuevo and folk . Recordings were made with the Celtic fusion musician Martyn Bennett , the Norwegian jazz percussionist Thomas Strønen and the lyricist and songwriter Michael Marra .

Lee is particularly interested in working with young musicians. She is active in the youth work of the Scottish Chamber Orchestra , is Patron-in Chief of the Perth Youth Orchestra , has trained musicians for the Icelandic National Youth Orchestra and the Cambridge County Youth Orchestra and is the coach of the National Youth Orchestra of Scotland . She is touring successfully with the Reeling and Writhing Theater with a series of performances for babies.
