Clancy Newman (* 1977 in Albany / New York ) is an American cellist and composer.

Newman began playing the cello at the age of six and won the gold medal in the string category at the Dandenong Youth Festival in Australia at the age of twelve against competitors who were twice as old. He then studied at the Juilliard School and Columbia University with David Gibson , Joel Krosnick and Harvey Shapiro , among others, and won several other competitions, including the Juilliard School Cello Competition , the National Federation of Music Clubs Competition and the Astral Artists National Auditions .

As a soloist, Newman toured the US, Europe, Canada and Australia, performing with orchestras such as the National Symphony Orchestra , the Juilliard Symphony Orchestra and the Symphony Orchestras of North Carolina, Jacksonville, Richmond, Hartford and Santa Fe and the Musicians from Marlboro . As a chamber musician, he was a member of the Weiss Kaplan Newman Trio and the Chamber Music Society Two at Lincoln Center , and later the Clarosa Piano Quartet . More recently he has been a member of the Formosa String Quartet and a duo partner of the violinist Tai Murray .

Newman wrote his first compositions at the age of seven. In 2002 he created a string quartet, the following year he played his Four Pieces for Solo Cello with the Violin Society in New York . The world premiere of his Sonata for Cello and Piano took place in 2004, followed in 2005 by Four Seasons for cello and chamber orchestra. Newman has received composition commissions from the Astral Artists , the Barnett Foundation , the Carpe Diem String Quartet and the UBS Chamber Music Festival in Lexington. For his project Pop-Unpopped he composed and played monthly cello caprices over the respective winner of the US Billboard Charts .
