Hugo Fiorato
Hugo Fiorato (born August 28, 1914 in New York City , † April 23, 2012 ) was an American violinist and conductor.
Life
Fiorato started playing the violin at the age of four. He attended the Juilliard School and then continued his education in Italy. In 1947 he founded the WQXR String Quartet with Harry Glickman , Jack Braunstein and Hervey Shapiro , which existed until 1963 and released two albums: one with Darius Milhaud's string quartet and Joaquín Turina's La Oración del Torero , the second with César Franck's string quartet.
When his friend George Balanchine founded the New York City Ballet in 1947 , he was first its concertmaster, and in 1989 its chief conductor. He directed the orchestra until his 90th birthday. He also served as chief conductor and musical director of the Boston Ballet , the Houston Ballet and the National Ballet in Washington.
