Joshua Gordon

Joshua Gordon (* 1964 ) is an American cellist .

Gordon studied cello at the Juilliard School with Jerome Carrington and Harvey Shapiro , and later with Joel Krosnick . His chamber music teachers were Samuel Sanders , Paul Zukofsky and the members of the Juilliard String Quartet .

Since 1989 he has been active in the Composers Conference led by Mario Davidovsky and James Baker . In 2002 he became a member of the Lydian String Quartet (with Andrea Segar , Judith Eisenberg and Mark Berger ), with whom he not only works from the Classical, Romantic and Modernist periods but also works by contemporary composers such as Martin Boykan , Mohammed Fairouz , Vincent Persichetti and Yu-Hui Chang , Eric Chasalow , John Harbison , Lee Hyla , Donald Martino , Harold Meltzer , David Rakowski , Kurt Rohde and Yehudi Wyner . He has been a member of the Worcester Chamber Music Society since 2012. He also appeared as a guest with various string quartets and chamber music ensembles.

With Randall Hodgkinson he forms the Gordon and Hodgkinson Duo , whose repertoire includes compositions by Louis Gordon , Vanessa Lann , Gunther Schuller , Augusta Read Thomas and Scott Wheeler . Her debut album was a recording of Leon Ornstein's complete works for cello and piano. As a soloist, Gordon played Johann Sebastian Bach's cello suites and works by contemporary composers such as John Cage , Elliott Carter , Mario Davidovsky Morton Feldman , Jonathan Harvey , Tod Machover , Jeffrey Mumford , Vincent Persichetti , Peter Sculthorpe , Gunther Schuller and Roger Sessions . Gordon has been a professor at Brandeis University since 2002 . His students include Eric Schatz Alterman and Jacob MacKay .
