Ilya Finkelshteyn

Ilya Finkelshteyn (* in Leningrad ) is an American cellist and music teacher of Russian origin.

Life

Finkelshteyn began his musical training at the Special School for Music of the Leningrad Conservatory with Sergei Chernyadiev . In the USA, he continued her at the University of Minnesota Music School with Tanya Reminikova before going to the Juilliard School . There he studied cello with Harvey Shapiro and chamber music with Felix Galimir , Samuel Sanders and members of the Juilliard String Quartet for six years .

Shortly before completing his studies, he became a member of the Saint Louis Symphony Orchestra led by Hans Vonk , to which he was a member for five years. From 2002 to 2009 he was principal cellist with the Baltimore Symphony Orchestra under Juri Temirkanow . Since 2009 he has been principal cellist of the Cincinnati Symphony Orchestra . He has also appeared as a guest soloist with other orchestras such as the Detroit Symphony Orchestra , the Mostly Mozart Festival Orchestra , the Baltimore Chamber Orchestra , the Saint Paul Civic Orchestra , the Peninsula Music Festival Orchestra , the National Repertory Orchestra, and the Bardy Symphony Orchestra .

Finkelshteyn took part in several international music festivals and competitions and won prizes at the Concertino Praga Festival , the Russian Cello Competition, the Aspen Music Festival Concerto Competition , the Chautauqua Concerto Competition and the First Prize at the Juilliard Concerto Competition . His chamber music partners include musicians such as András Schiff , Hilary Hahn , David Soyer , Richard Goode , Joseph Silverstein , Steven Ansell , Harold Robinson , Vadim Repin , Isidore Cohen and Lydia Artymiw .

In addition to private lessons in his own studio, Finkelshteyn gave master classes at the Manhattan School of Music , the Peabody Conservatory , Indiana University , the University of California , the Jonannesen International School of the Arts in Canada and the Orchestra Academy at Indiana University. Since 2012 he has been teaching cello at the College-Conservatory of Music at the University of Cincinnati .
