Jeffrey Lastrapes

Jeffrey Noel Lastrapes is an American cellist and music teacher.

Born almost blind, Lastrapes played the piano and violin in his childhood before switching to the cello. At the age of sixteen he went to Temple University . At the Curtis Institute of Music in Philadelphia he received his bachelor's degree as a student of Orlando Cole , and he completed his studies at the Juilliard School with Harvey Shapiro as a Master of Music . In addition, he attended master classes from Mstislaw Rostropowitsch , Paul Tortelier , Joel Krosnick , Yo Yo Ma and Lynn Harrell, among others . In 1991 he represented the USA at the cello competition in Chile and won two of the four main prizes.

Lastrapes has performed as a soloist in the USA, South America and Europe with orchestras such as the Monroe Symphony Orchestra , the Baton Rouge Symphony , the Midland-Odessa Symphony , the Ibex Chamber Orchestra of New York , the Lower Marion Symphony of Philadelphia , the Festival Orchestra of Vina del Mar and the National Philharmonic of Honduras. He also made appearances on radio and television and made recordings for New World Records and Centaur Records . He is a co-founder of the Texas-based Carus Ensemble .

Lastrapes has taught at Oklahoma State University and the Collegiate School in New York. He is Associate Professor of Cello at the Texas Tech University Music School and has also taught at the Tennessee Governor's School for the Arts and, since 1996, at the Interlochen Center for the Arts . In the 2019-20 season he visited four cities in China and gave recitals and masterclasses there.
