Renata Ersilia Clotilde Tebaldi ( February 1, 1922 in PesaroDecember 19, 2004 in San Marino ), known as the "Angel's Voice", was an Italian opera singer ( spinto soprano ).

Life

Renata Tebaldi was born the daughter of an orchestra musician. Despite serious illnesses - she contracted polio as a child - and the poverty of her family, she was able to study singing at the conservatory in Parma , after initially wanting to become a pianist . She made her debut in 1944. After the Second World War she was discovered as a soprano by the conductor Arturo Toscanini , promoted and engaged at La Scala in Milan , where she took part in a famous concert in 1946 marking the reopening of the house after war-related renovations.

There was a contest of voices with Maria Callas , who was also engaged at La Scala . After top dog scuffles, Renata Tebaldi moved to the USA. From 1955 to 1973 she belonged to the ensemble of the Metropolitan Opera in New York and undertook concert tours worldwide. In 17 seasons, the soprano appeared in 210 performances at the "Met".

Along with Maria Callas , she is one of the most successful singers of the second half of the 20th century. It is widely rumored that the two divas didn't like each other. "Tigress" versus "Angel" were stories that appeared in the press in the 1950s and 1960s about crocheting Callas versus Tebaldi. The opera friends were caught in a religious dispute worldwide as to who deserved the crown of the better singer.

"The Tebaldi" made a name for herself primarily as an interpreter in operas by Giuseppe Verdi and Giacomo Puccini . She shone in the role of Desdemona in the Verdi opera Otello . Her engagement in New York began and ended with this role.

In 1973 Renata Tebaldi retired from performing opera roles and later from public life. Her last performance with a song was at La Scala in Milan in 1976. She died on December 19, 2004 at her home in San Marino after a long illness.

Their repertoire included i.a. the roles of Desdemona in Verdi's Otello , Aida in Verdi's Aida , Violetta in Verdi's La traviata , Manon in Puccini's Manon Lescaut , Puccini's Tosca , Wally in Catalani 's La Wally , Adriana in Cilea's Adriana Lecouvreur , Cleopatra in Handel's Giulio Cesare , Elisabeth in Wagner's Tannhäuser as well as Elsa in Wagner's Lohengrin .

She recorded a large part of her stage roles for the record. Her tenor partner , six times Carlo Bergonzi , was in the Mario del Monaco recording studio for 14 complete recordings of Italian operas .

On June 7th, 2014 the Museo Renata Tebaldi was opened in Busseto .
