The Florida Department of Transportation (FDOT) is the state transportation authority for the US state of Florida . It was founded in 1969.

The FDOT serves a total of 196,971 kilometers of road (122,392 miles ), 20 commercial airports, two space airports, 31 urban transit systems, 15 seaports and 6,183 kilometers of rail (3,842 miles).

Of the 122,392 road miles, 12,109 miles are state highways. These in turn are broken down into 1,495 miles of interstate highways , 4,120 miles of US highways and 6,494 miles of state roads .

In December 2014, Jim Boxold was appointed Secretary General of the FDOT by Governor Rick Scott .

The department is divided into seven areas of responsibility:

  • Southwest Florida
  • Northeast Florida
  • Northwest Florida
  • Southeast Florida
  • Central Florida
  • South Florida
  • West Central Florida

Added to that comes Florida's Turnpike Enterprise as a subsidiary.
