Leonard Kahn

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Leonard R. Kahn (born June 16, 1926 in New York City , † June 3, 2012 in southern Florida ) was an American electrical engineer.

Life

After receiving his bachelor's degree from the Polytechnic Institute of Brooklyn (now part of New York University ), Kahn worked for a long time at RCA Laboratories in Princeton, New Jersey , where he received numerous patents on AM stereo broadcasting. While medium wave broadcasting is considered outdated in Europe and is therefore disappearing, in the USA Kahn found forms of use in which the known shortcomings of medium wave do not play a decisive role. In the USA, medium wave broadcasting - called AM radio there - still plays an important role today.

He became the founder and president of Kahn Communications in Carle Place, New York , which developed CAM-D ( Compatible Amplitude Modulation - Digital ). In 1958 he developed his digital stereo radio system Kahn-Hazeltine . During this time he also developed Symmetra-peak , which competed with Volumax and Audimax of CBS Laboratories .

Kahn was also one of the world famous amateur radio personalities . His callsign was WB2SSP.

In the late 1980s he got increasingly involved in patent disputes, including with Motorola (because of C-QUAM ) and General Motors .
