Sunrise Avenue is a Finnish rock band whose style includes pop rock and ballads . Her most successful songs are Fairytale Gone Bad (2006) and Hollywood Hills (2011).
history
In 1992 Samu Haber and Jan Hohenthal founded the band Sunrise in Espoo . Since there were already eleven other bands with this name in Scandinavia, the group changed its name to Sunrise Avenue in 2002 . In the same year Haber and Hohenthal parted ways. Initially, the group was able to establish itself as a club live band in their home country. After it had been rejected by numerous producers, it was decided at the end of 2004 to record an album with producer Jukka Backlund (at that time still with Killer Aspect ), without the band having a record deal. A friend of the band, Mikko Virtala, provided the necessary financial means by selling his house. In summer 2005 the group signed a contract with Bonnier Amigo Music Group for the Finnish market, and the following year with EMI Group .
After releasing the first singles All Because of You and Romeo in early 2006 , the band released the album On the Way to Wonderland in Finland in May . The third single, Fairytale Gone Bad , was released on August 23rd and reached number two on the Finnish charts . In Germany the piece was released as the first single; the song was used for the ZDF broadcasts of the 2006 Tour de France . The single was released on August 11, 2006, and the album followed two weeks later. At the same time, the band played their first gigs in Germany - in Cologne's Underground Club and at The Dome 39. Fairytale Gone Bad reached number 3 in Germany , and during the following three years it kept returning to the charts, bringing it to a total of 70 Chart weeks.
On October 20, 2006, Sunrise Avenue went gold in Finland with their debut album On the Way to Wonderland. The group then released a gold edition of the album on November 29, 2006, on which additional songs and remixes can be found. In August 2007 founding member and guitarist Janne Kärkkäinen left the band due to personal and musical differences. At short notice, a replacement guitarist was found in Riku Rajamaa, who had previously played in Hanna Pakarinen's band . On September 4, 2007, Sunrise Avenue was nominated for the MTV Europe Music Award in the 'New Sounds of Europe' category, and on September 28, 2007 the DVD Live in Wonderland was released , whose material was mainly at the concert at the E-Werk in Cologne March 2007. In September 2008 Haber confirmed the final commitment of Riku Rajamaa as a full band member. On October 1st, 2008, it was announced on Sunrise Avenue's Myspace page that Jukka Backlund would leave the band and concentrate on his job as a producer from now on. In March 2009 the group presented their new keyboard player Osmo Ikonen, who is only there as a tour / live musician. Backlund is still performing with Sunrise Avenue when Icons are prevented.
On May 22nd, 2009 the second album Popgasm was released ; the first single from it, entitled The Whole Story , was released on March 20, 2009 in Finland. The publication in Germany followed on May 2nd. On September 4, 2009, the second single, Not Again, was released . The third single, Welcome to my Life , was released on November 20th . In addition, the band went on tour in autumn, followed by a purely acoustic second tour in spring 2010. On June 2, 2010 the acoustic album Acoustic Tour 2010 was released . The album was only available on CD in Finland. In the German-speaking region, there was initially only a digital release, before the CD was released on November 26, 2010. The booklet was designed from photos sent in by fans. In addition, in response to the success of the tour in spring, a second part of the acoustic tour was announced for December 2010.
The next album, Out of Style , was released on March 25, 2011; the first single, Hollywood Hills , was released on January 21, 2011 and has sold 300,000 times in Germany. In 2013 Sunrise Avenue went on tour through Germany with various big bands and new arrangements of their songs. On October 18, 2013, the fourth studio album Unholy Ground was released , which entered the German album charts at number 3 and at number 10 in the Finnish album charts at the beginning of November. In addition to the original version, there is a deluxe edition that includes some live songs from the 'Big Band Theory' tour. The single Lifesaver was released on October 4th and reached number 9 in the German single charts.
In September 2014, Haber announced that Sunrise Avenue would take a break until summer 2015. The first best-of album, Fairytales - Best of 2006-2014 , was released on October 3rd, reaching number 1 in the charts in Germany and Switzerland for the first time. The album also features three new songs, including You Can Never Be Ready , which reached number 41 and Nothing is Over , which reached number 16 in the German charts. In August 2017, the single I Help You Hate Me was released from the fifth studio album Heartbreak Century , which was released on October 6, 2017. In January 2019, the group released the theme song Iron Sky for the film Iron Sky: The Coming Race .
On December 2, 2019, the band announced their breakup and released their final song Thank You for Everything . She has planned a farewell tour, which was originally supposed to start in Leipzig in June 2020 and end on August 15 at the Helsinki Olympic Stadium . The tour has been postponed to the beginning of April 2021.
