Grandval is a municipality in the Bernese Jura administrative district in the canton of Bern in Switzerland . The former German name Granfelden is hardly used today.

geography

Grandval lies at 588  m above sea level. M. , 4 km east of the village of Moutier (air line). The village stretches on both sides of the stream La Raus in the Cornet , the eastern part of the Juralängstal of Moutier, which is also called Grand Val .

The area of the 8.2 km² municipal area comprises a narrow strip of the valley basin of the Grand Val. In the north, the area extends to the high plateau of the Jura range of Mont Raimeux , where at 1302  m above sea level. M. the highest point of Grandval is located. The plateau is occupied by extensive Jura high pastures with the typical mighty spruce trees , which either stand individually or in groups. The southern slope of Mont Raimeux is very steep in the area of Grandval and criss-crossed by prominent rocky outcrops and precipices. To the south, the municipality extends to the ridge of the Oberdörferberg (up to 1233  m above sea level ), which forms the eastern continuation of the Graitery chain. The southeast border runs on the crest of Dos les Rochattes , which marks the left flank of the valley of the Klus von Gänsbrunnen. In 1997, 4% of the municipal area was in settlements, 51% in forests and woodland, 44% in agriculture and a little less than 1% was unproductive land.

The farm settlement Raimeux de Grandval ( 1288  m above sea level ) on a broad knoll near the summit of Mont Raimeux as well as several individual farms belong to Grandval . Neighboring communities of Grandval are Eschert , Belprahon , Roches and Crémines in the canton of Bern, Courrendlin in the canton of Jura and Gänsbrunnen in the canton of Solothurn .

population

With 404 inhabitants (as of December 31, 2018) Grandval is one of the smaller communities in the Bernese Jura . Of the residents, 85.6% are French-speaking, 12.0% German-speaking and 0.8% Italian-speaking (as of 2000). The population of Grandval was 261 in 1850 and 287 in 1900. In the further course it rose to 426 persons by 1970, since then a downward trend has been observed again.

economy

Grandval was mainly characterized by agriculture until the beginning of the 20th century . In addition, a mill was operated, and pottery and canvas weaving, mainly at home, were of certain importance. With the upswing of the machine tool industry in the Moutier valley from 1880, some precision mechanics and mechanical engineering companies also settled in Grandval. In the last few decades the village has gradually developed into a residential community. Many workers are commuters and work in Moutier.

traffic

The community has good transport links. It is located on the main road from Moutier to Balsthal . On August 1, 1908, the Solothurn – Moutier line of the Solothurn-Münster Railway from Moutier through the Weissenstein tunnel to Solothurn was opened with a station in Grandval.

history

Grandval was first mentioned in writing around the year 900 under the name Grandis vallis ( great valley ). In 917 and 938 the village was devastated by the Hungarians. A church in Grandval was mentioned before the turn of the first millennium, which suggests a relatively dense settlement of the Cornet at that time.

The village was under the Moutier-Grandval provost until the end of the 18th century . From 1797 to 1815 Grandval belonged to France and was initially part of the Mont-Terrible department , which was linked to the Haut-Rhin department in 1800 . By the decision of the Congress of Vienna , the place came to the canton of Bern to the district of Moutier in 1815. Since 1967 there has been cooperation with the neighboring communities on the municipal level with regard to water supply, wastewater treatment and primary schools.

Attractions

The current construction of the reformed Saint-Martin church dates back to 1663, extensive renovations and changes were carried out in the years 1701 to 1706 and 1927. The parish of Grandval also includes Crémines, Corcelles and Eschert. The present rectory was built at the beginning of the 19th century. Before that, the pastors lived in the Maison de la dîme ( tithing house ), which was built in the 16th century and has sculpted windows. The Wisard House is a stately home that was built around 1570. Henri Visard lived here, a well-known local citizen who represented the interests of the Moutier-Grandval Provoste to the Prince-Bishop of Basel at the beginning of the 18th century . The agricultural museum is housed in the house, which has now been renovated. The upper part of the village still has some typical farmhouses from the 18th and 19th centuries.
