Souboz is a village in the municipality of Petit-Val , which is in the Bernese Jura administrative district in the canton of Bern in Switzerland .

Souboz was a municipality until December 31, 2014 . On January 1, 2015 Souboz merged with the municipalities of Châtelat , Monible and Sornetan to form the new municipality of Petit-Val .

Souboz is 875 m above sea level. M. , ten kilometers west of Moutier (beeline). The street-line village extends on the crest of a promontory that slopes to the west, in the eastern part of the Petit Val basin , which is located between two anticlines of the Jura .

The area of the 10.6 square kilometer former municipal area covers the entire eastern part of the Petit Val, which is drained from the Tchaïbez brook to the Sorne . The northern border runs on the ridge of the Jura range, which forms the western continuation of the Montagne de Moutier. The highest peaks here are Sur la Chèvre ( 1134 m above sea level ) and Sur le Rochet ( 1062 m above sea level ). This chain is broken in the west by the typical Jurassic Gorges de Pichoux , whose upper eastern valley flank still belongs to Souboz. To the south, the former municipal area extends to the anticline of the Moron , on which at 1280 m above sea level. M. the highest point of Souboz is reached. The northern flank of the Moron is divided by several erosion valleys. In the far east the area extends over the pass of Les Ecorcheresses into the catchment area of the Chalière stream , which flows into the Birs at Moutier. In 1997, 2% of the former municipal area was accounted for by settlements, 60% for forests and woodlands, 37% for agriculture and a little less than 1% was unproductive land.

The hamlet of Les Ecorcheresses ( 913 m above sea level ) on a syncline pass between the chains of the Moron and the Montagne de Moutier as well as several individual farms belong to Souboz . The neighboring communities of Souboz are Saules , Loveresse , Valbirse , Champoz and Perrefitte in the canton of Bern and Soulce and Undervelier in the canton of Jura .

With 131 inhabitants (as of December 31, 2013) Souboz was one of the small communities in the Bernese Jura . Of the residents, 73.0% are French-speaking, 26.1% German-speaking and 0.9% Portuguese-speaking (as of 2000). The population of Souboz was 200 in 1850 and 236 in 1920. Since then, the population has decreased significantly by around 50%.

economy

Souboz is still a predominantly agricultural village, with dairy farming and cattle breeding predominating. Smaller businesses are in the valley that separates Souboz from Sornetan and at the upper entrance to the Pichoux Gorge.

The former municipality is located off the major thoroughfares on the cantonal road that leads from Moutier to Bellelay . Souboz and Les Ecorcheresses are connected to the public transport network by a postbus course that runs from Moutier to Souboz.

history

Souboz was first mentioned in a document in 1398. At that time the village was a fiefdom of the Moutier-Grandval monastery . The place name is derived from Sous le Bois ( under the forest ). From 1797 to 1815 Souboz belonged to France and was initially part of the Mont-Terrible department , which was linked to the Haut-Rhin department in 1800 . By the decision of the Congress of Vienna , the place came to the canton of Bern to the district of Moutier in 1815 .

Until December 31, 2014 Souboz was an independent municipality .

Attractions

The townscape of Souboz is characterized by numerous typical farmhouses and granaries from the 17th to 19th centuries. The schoolhouse with a bell tower dates from 1854. Souboz does not have its own church, it belongs to the Sornetan parish.
