The Moron is a 1337 m above sea level. M. high mountain ridge with observation tower in the Swiss Jura . The summit lies on the floor of the Bernese municipality of Malleray , around 7 km west-southwest of Moutier . The name originally goes back to the Latin name mons rotundus (round mountain).
geography
The ridge of the Moron extends over a length of about 12 km in a west-east direction according to the general fold structure of the Jura in this region. On average, it is around 2 to 3 km wide. The height of the Moron is limited in the south by the valley basin of the Vallée de Tavannes , in the west by the moorland of La Sagne near Bellelay , in the north by the so-called Petit Val , a longitudinal basin that is drained by the Sorne and the Ruisseau de Tchaïbez , and to the east of the Grand Val , the basin of Moutier.
The steep flanks of the Moron are covered with thick beech and fir forests. On the mostly 0.5 to 1 km wide ridge area there are extensive Jura high pastures and several mountain farms. The pastureland is delimited by the characteristic dry stone walls.
geology
From a structural and geological point of view, the moron forms an anticline of the Jura folds . This anticline, which is relatively wide due to a thrust in the western part, becomes noticeably narrower towards the east and dips towards the Moutier basin. The upcoming competent rock layers of the Upper Jurassic Period ( Malm ) are exposed in various places. Especially on the northern flank of the Moron, the limestone layers could be attacked by erosion and partially removed, creating several combes here.
