0816 is the fifth album by the Swiss rapper Bligg . It was released on October 30, 2008 on the Universal Music label . The track Rosalie had previously been released as a single. The musical style of the album produced by Fred Herrmann and Bligg is hip-hop, supplemented with instruments from Swiss folk music. In terms of content, reference is also made to Swiss culture in the texts.

At 0816 , Bligg was able to reach number 1 in the Swiss album charts for the first time, as well as a platinum record and later double, triple and quadruple platinum, making the album one of the most commercially successful hip-hop releases in Switzerland. A total of 140,000 units of the album were sold.

background

After Bligg's fourth album, Yves Spink, was released on May 11, 2007, the rapper appeared on the Swiss TV show The Biggest Swiss Hits in late 2007 to present his single, Volksmusigg . He presented the song in a newly interpreted version together with the folk group Streichmusik Alder . When the title was recorded, the text, presented as rap over a hip-hop beat, was combined with stylistic elements of folk music. The single stayed in the Swiss single charts for 24 weeks and Bligg completed a tour with the string music Alder. Since Bligg was satisfied with the result of the collaboration and Volksmusigg was a commercial success, the idea for the new album was born to increasingly integrate influences from Swiss folk music into the hip-hop pieces:

“When we recorded the song in the studio, I discovered that the folk instruments - e. B. dulcimer - are very interesting to embed in my sound. So I realized that there are many interesting things to try out on the musical field here in Switzerland. "

Emergence

Rapper Bligg in 2008

The recordings for 0816 took place in the Hitmill Studio and lasted over four months. Marco Bliggensdorfer, the real name of the rapper, produced the album with Fred Herrmann, who works as a drummer for Bligg and is the head of the recording studio. Likewise was Roman Camenzind involved in the design. Since Bligg does not consume folk music privately, at the beginning of the creation process he first listened to folk music albums with Herrmann for over three days in order to “get acquainted” with the instruments used in them.

Folk musicians were then used for the recordings, who played their instruments in the studio for the tracks. The collaboration with the musicians was different. While the accordionist Hubert Kieffer was able to work with Bligg without any problems, the dulcimer players struggled to keep to the rhythm of the hip-hop beats . Fred Hermann played guitar, piano, drums and bass for the songs and, together with Bligg, produced the beats as the basic structure of the pieces. After completing the recordings, the audio post-processing, known as mastering , was carried out by Oli Bösch in the Livingroom Studios.

With the album title, Bligg alludes to the phrase 08/15 , which is used to classify something as “ordinary” or “average”. According to the rapper, “0816” stands for the opposite of 08/15 and should underline that the album “should reflect something completely new”.

According to Bligg, it was important to «musically depict a modern Switzerland». The basic structure of the tracks is made up of hip-hop beats, which, with a few exceptions, were produced by Bligg and Fred Herrmann. These are augmented by live instruments contributed by the rapper's band and outside folk musicians. The pieces combine modernity, in the form of the style elements of hip-hop , with traditional country music .

For several titles the producers used the accordion , which was played by Hubert Kieffer. The dulcimer is used in the pieces Nur en Söldner and D'Heimat . This was played by Töbi Tobler . Roman Camenzind produced the song Signal and Rosalie co-produced with Herrmann and Bligg. He also played an acoustic guitar and a bass. The bass is also used in Ciao Bella and S'Lotti schilled . The instrument was contributed by Ph! L! Pp Schweidler. The track Hollywood was produced by Shuko and 7Inch. A solo guitar played by Chris Muzik appears in the pieces Das dörfsch nöd , S'Lotti schilled and 1 Tag . Harmonica and wind instruments were also used for the background music for the title D'Heimat . Roland van Straaten contributed the harmonica and Bernhard Schoch and Steffen Arpagaus played the wind instruments that can also be heard in the song Das dörfsch nöd . In addition, the string instrument cello comes into play in 1 day and 0816 intro .

The stylistic device of scratching , which is typical of hip-hop pieces , was used for some album titles by DJ Cutmando, who has been working with Bligg since the late 1990s. When scratching, a moving record is rhythmically moved back and forth by hand. The attached needle of the record player thus plays a section of the piece of music analogously to the movement of the hand back and forth.

When composing some pieces, Fred Herrmann and Bligg used the melodies of well-known songs. Parts of the title D'Heimat are based on Nutbush City Limits by Ike and Tina Turner . For Das dörfsch nöd , the producers used Walk this way and All Along the Watchtower , published in 1967 by Bob Dylan and later reinterpreted by Jimi Hendrix . In an interview, Bligg stated that these were “bowing” to the artists and emphasized that ultimately they were completely new pieces.

singing

Bligg with the rock musician Gölä

The lyrics on the album are performed by Bligg as rap , the typical hip-hop form of spoken song . Furthermore, the musician uses melodious singing in the passages of some pieces, such as the hooklines of the title. Since his 2006 album Mit Liib & Seel , Bligg has also presented his songs with melodic vocals. The rapper reads his texts in Swiss dialect , which he has used since the beginning of his musical career and which he has thus been able to establish as the language for Swiss hip-hop music.

To reinforce the rapper's voice, backing vocals are used, which represent the secondary voices to the so-called lead voice in the songs. These were contributed as overdub by Lesley Bogaert and Bligg themselves . In addition, the Swiss Corinne Gfeller appears as a secondary voice on the songs Nur en Söldner and Das dörfsch nöd . For Musigg i dä Schwiiz , the yodeler Tamara Roos was used as a stylistic element of folk music .

In addition to the collaboration with folk musicians, the piece Das dörfsch nöd was created in collaboration with the Swiss rock musician Gölä . Both singers knew each other before, as they had given concerts in the same places and were part of the line-up of music festivals. At the time 0816 was created , Bligg met Gölä at a hotel bar, where they both got into conversation. Bligg then invited the rock musician to his studio, where the title Das dörfsch nöd was later recorded. The two musicians only had six hours to complete the song. In an interview, Bligg praised Gölä: “He is the greatest dialect artist of all time, the musical mouthpiece of this country. And he makes blunt, straight texts that touch the audience. " 0816 was released on the same day as Gölä's album Z'Länke fäge , which went straight to number 1 on the Swiss album charts.

Texts

Like the instrumentation, the contents of the texts relate to Switzerland and have an authentic basis. Bligg said in an interview: “The motto of the scene is: Keep it real, be real. When an American hip-hopper talks about his childhood and youth in the ghetto, then that's real. But when Swiss rappers tell ghetto stories, then something is wrong. I want to rap about things that are happening here, that are here, that are real. " Accordingly, many texts deal with “everyday stories” and observations or are the product of personal experiences of the person Marco Bliggensdorfer.

Following the album's intro, the first song is Musigg i dä Schwiiz . In it, Bligg refers to various Swiss musicians of various styles. For example, he alludes to My Name Is George , Mani Matter , Plüsch , DJ BoBo , Heidi Happy , Züri West , Schlieremer Chind , Baschi , Adrian Stern , Peter, Sue & Marc and Wurzel 5 and underlines his affection for Switzerland and his affiliation on the Swiss music scene in the refrain: «I do Musigg i dä Schwiiz, I like Musigg us Schwiiz. Everything I break is a melody and a beat. I do Musigg i dä Schwiiz, like Musigg us Schwiiz. I can nöd without them and they nöd without me. " The idea for the title arose after Bligg had been asked to appear again on the show The Biggest Swiss Hits . The rapper wanted to transfer the concept of the show, in which various styles of music are presented by Swiss artists, to the song.

The content of the play Rosalie is about a woman who mourns a past love affair. The woman who bears the name Rosalie is sitting in a café and is approached by a man there. He compliments Rosalie and offers her a rose, which makes her happy ("Rosalie, she feels in paradise. [...] He pays her a compliment until she is ashamed and blushed completely."). She then asks how she can thank him, whereupon he turns out to be a rose seller and demands money for the rose. Finally, it is shown how the seller goes to the next table and offers a rose to a woman named Melanie. The idea for the piece Rosalie came to Bligg during a lunch break in a restaurant when a rose seller entered the restaurant and offered his goods.

Gölä describes the title Das dörfsch nöd as a «total male song». Bligg takes up disputes with the singer that arise in relationships. The main focus is on the prohibitions and behavior of women. The two singers complain that women criticize men's alcohol consumption and complain about women's preference for shoes.

The consumption of ten “ Appenzellers ” is described in 10 Chlini Appenzeller . The lyrical self describes the impressions of the increasingly drunk state. The landlady appears in suspenders like Ruth Metzler . After seven people in Appenzell, contrary to their own principles, the person also starts smoking marijuana , which leads to a further deterioration in perception.

With the song Secondos , Bligg deals with the subject of immigration in general and the biography of his grandfather in particular. The rapper describes how his grandfather, who was born in the Italian city of Benevento in 1930 , emigrated to Switzerland to work on a farm, learned German, built a living and in 1959, a year after he married a Swiss woman, had a daughter who gave birth to Bligg a few years later. Secondos is intended to underline the importance of immigrants for Switzerland, which was reflected in the rhetorical question "What would they be?" comes into play.

In D'Heimat , the rapper expresses his bond with his Swiss homeland. This is characterized by its landscapes, different cultures, cities and castles as well as the four languages that are spoken in the population. The following song, Signal, addresses a past love affair. The narrator expresses that he still loves his former partner.

The last title 1 day deals with the subject of death. Bligg lists the things he would do if he only had one day to live. He names things like skydiving , fathering a child, trying numerous drugs or withdrawing and spending all the money in his account. With the piece, the rapper wants to encourage the listener to "appreciate" every moment in life and to be aware of their own mortality.

Furthermore, S'Lotti schilled is about a girl who is isolated and laughed at by her schoolmates because of her appearance, Hollywood about the superficiality of Hollywood culture , which is a negative role model and distracts people from reality, Nur en mercenary of freedom and Bligg's love for this ("Freedom ischste wished mer d'Freiheit nöd chaufe chan.") And Ciao Bella of an unsatisfactory relationship with a woman whose peculiarities are humorous enumerated.

illustration

On the cover of the album, Bligg poses with a bull. The animal should "represent a strong and powerful Switzerland" and also symbolize the country, whereas Bligg stands for the city. This transfers the concept of the album, for which folk music elements were combined with hip-hop, to the artwork. The cover photo was taken on September 10, 2008 at the Brown Swiss breeding animal market in Zug . When choosing a suitable bull, Bligg decided on Bimbo, the 750 kilogram “Mister Original Brown Swiss of the Zug Breeding Animal Market 2008”.

Lena Maria Thüring, a photographer born in Arlesheim in 1981 , shot the photos for the album's booklet. The design of the artwork was carried out by the agency Formeldrei, which was also responsible for the album covers of the musicians Stephan Remmler , Adrian Stern and 2raumwohnung . The texts of the pieces are printed in the booklet.

marketing

Video

In the run-up to the album's release, a “promo video” showing excerpts of the creation of the album was posted on the Internet. In it, for example, Bligg is shown while writing his texts and recording in the HitMill Studio or playing some instruments. Some pieces from 0816 are played to provide background for the pictures . In addition, people from Marco Bliggensdorfer's environment like the singer Emel, Fred Herrmann, Ueli Alder, Roman Camenzind and his grandfather Antonio Janotti have their say.

Singles

On October 10, 2008 Universal Music released the song Rosalie as a CD single. The original and the instrumental version of the piece can be heard on this. Rosalie later appeared again on the Swiss edition of the sampler Bravo The Hits 2008 . Bligg presented the song, among others, 22 February 2009 with the finalists of the talent show Music Star on Swiss television.

The second single was Musigg i dä Schwiiz . This was also published on the sampler The Biggest Swiss Hits - City & Country of the television show of the same name. Bligg had already presented the title in the Swiss program on November 23, 2008.

tour

At the end of 2008, Bligg initially completed three exclusive concerts, which took place in the Swiss cities of Solothurn , Herisau and Lucerne . During his performances, the rapper was accompanied by his seven-piece band as well as an accordionist and the dulcimer player Nicolas Senn. According to Bligg, the aim was "to transport the sound of the CD onto the stage through the accompanying musicians."

19-year-old Nicolas Senn had already been approached by Bligg in summer 2008 to work with him on 0816 . Senn declined the request because he was in high school . A few months later, the rapper asked again to win the Romanshorner for his tour. The dulcimer player is positive about working with Bligg:

“Bligg is very conscientious. [...] Even backstage, he doesn't play the big star, he's never belittled. Because I don't always have the leading voice with my dulcimer, as in my solo performances, the function of the dulcimer is reduced to percussive elements for certain titles. I play along with 20 of the 25 or so songs on the tour. I don't have any notes, you don't use them with pop musicians, as Bligg explained to me, and I've made a few notes for the respective songs. During the rehearsals everything is very spontaneous and in many cases a melody only really develops then. It's a good experience to play in a band. "

- Nicolas Senn : Tagblatt.ch

After Bligg had declared that an extended tour depended on the success of the album, a concert first took place in Interlaken on January 1, 2009 , and finally the Bligg 0816 tour opened on January 30, 2009 in the exhibition hall in Basel . The tour comprised 15 dates and ended on April 18, 2009 with a performance in Zofingen . As in previous appearances, Bligg was accompanied on the tour by his band and the folk instrument players.

reception

success

0816 is the most successful album by Swiss composer Bligg to date and the first dialect rap album to be awarded a platinum record . The sound carrier entered the Swiss album charts at number 4 on November 16, 2008 and then fell back to positions 10 and 14. From the beginning of December 2008, 0816 was once again placed in the top 5 of the Swiss hit parade and finally reached position 1 on January 11, 2009 . Overall, the album was the best-selling album in Switzerland in five weeks. Due to the sales of over 30,000 records, Bligg received a platinum record, making him the second Swiss rapper to receive it after stress . 0816 later also achieved "double platinum" status. On July 3, 2009, Bligg and over 20 members of his team, including Lesley Bogaert, Nicolas Senn and Oli Bösch, finally received the triple platinum award from Universal Music for the sale of 90,000 units of the album. The award ceremony was held in the Swiss National Museum in Zurich. Moritz Faccin, who works at Universal Music as Director Special Marketing, gave the laudation. A total of 140,000 copies of the album have been sold so far.

Bligg was also able to successfully place the two singles Rosalie and Musigg i dä Schwiiz in the Swiss charts. Rosalie rose to number 21 on October 26, 2008, stayed in the top 25 of the singles charts for a few weeks and reached the top 10 of the charts on December 7, 2008 with position 8. In total, the first single occupied positions in the ten best-selling singles of the week for 13 weeks and reached the highest position 5. Rosalie is in 86th position in the all-time list of the best singles in the Swiss charts.

The second single, Musigg i dä Schwiiz , debuted at number 18 on December 7, 2008 and occupied positions in the top 30 for thirteen weeks. On December 14th, 2008 both single releases of the album were in the top 10 of the Swiss charts.

Awards

On February 19, 2009, 0816 received the Swiss Music Award in Zurich in the Best Album Urban National category. Bligg was also nominated for the title Rosalie in the category Best Song National . The winners of the award organized by IFPI Switzerland were selected by a jury, the audience vote and the sales figures determined.

Furthermore, Bligg received the Prix Walo award on April 19, 2009 in Interlaken . The musician won the most important award in the Swiss entertainment industry in the pop / rock category.

criticism

From the point of view of the editors of the Trespass.ch website, 0816 is “Bligg's homage to his homeland - the musical, the family and the social”. The pieces Rosalie and Ciao Bella convince with their groove and rhythm and 10 Chlini Appenzeller is the best "Süffel-Song" since the song Eisgekühlter Bommerlunder . Radio BE1 states that the special attraction of the album lies in the combination of “dulcimer and accordion” and “urban beats”. The rapper observes closely and portrays “his personal journey through Switzerland” in a fitting way.

The album was also received positively in a report by MKZWO.de. So this is not a “clumsy ingratiation to the friends of folk music, but a completely natural musical statement”. With songs like Musigg i dä Schwiiz, the rapper expresses his roots in Swiss music. The Tages-Anzeiger also takes up the aspect of the stylistic devices of folk music, the use of which Bligg creates "a dense, rich sound that harmonizes well with the melodious raps".
