Hey you! is a song by the German rapper Sido , which was released on October 16, 2009 as the first single of his fourth studio album Aggro Berlin . The song deals with Sido's own youth and brought to light for the first time his birth and childhood in the German Democratic Republic . The chorus of the song isborrowed fromthe first verse of Maria's song from the musical Linie 1 , in which it issungby Ilona Schulz . The single reached number 4 in the single charts in Germany. In 2010 Hey Du! Awardedan Echo Pop in the Best Video categoryand a Comet in the Best Song category.
background
In hey you! Sido first publicly discussed his origins in East Berlin . Sido was born in 1980 in Berlin-Prenzlauer Berg and grew up in what was then the German Democratic Republic. Half a year before the fall of the Berlin Wall , he traveled with his mother to the Federal Republic of Germany and then moved with her to a home for asylum seekers in Berlin-Wedding .
With the idea of processing "Marias Lied" from the musical "Linie 1" into a song of his own, Sido saw his origins as the necessary piece of untold past, according to the lyrics of the song. To date, Sido had not just left his GDR past unthought of during his career so far, but was deeply rooted in West Berliners through songs like West Berlin , especially during the early days of his career in the hip-hop formation Alles ist die Sekt, which was under contract with Aggro Berlin The rapeseed scene was rooted. In interviews Sido later stated that because of this and because of negative childhood experiences, he did not see the opportunity to make his past known at the time. Even his partner at the time, the singer Doreen , who was also born in the GDR, only found out about Sido's origins when the song was written.
The release of the single Hey du! occurred a few weeks before the 20th anniversary of the fall of the Berlin Wall. Sido emphasized in interviews that the publication was not deliberately placed close to the anniversary.

The first stanza of the song depicts Sido's youth in the GDR as well as his departure to West Berlin. The stanza leads to Sido's decision to keep his Eastern past secret and contains references to the pioneer organization Ernst Thälmann and the Ministry for State Security .
The second verse deals with Sido's move to the Märkisches Viertel and the social difficulties he and his environment, from which his rapper colleague and collaboration partner B-Tight is explicitly named, had to struggle before he rose to become a commercially successful musician succeeded.

Commercial win
In Germany, Hey you! 4th place in the German single charts and was able to hold out for a total of 16 weeks. Sido thus achieved his highest chart entry to date. With my block and no! had previously only been able to stay in the German charts two singles longer. Less than a year later, Heaven should wait , which advanced to second place, Hey you! as the highest placed Sido single. In Austria Hey Du! 12th place and 21st place in Switzerland. In the week from October 30th to October 5th, 2009, Hey you! both in Germany and in Austria in Austria , the highest-ranked German-language single.

Cover version
The Beatsteaks covered the song Marias Lied from the musical Linie 1 , from which the chorus for the song by Sido comes, for their live album Kanonen auf Spatzen during a concert in St. Gallen in 2008 .

The e-zine laut.de wrote in their review of the album Aggro Berlin "" Hey you! reports from unsteady childhood days, with an openness that takes surprise. Critic Awards
Hey Du has received several critical awards. In 2010 the title won the Comet in the "Best Song" category. In the same year it was also awarded the Echo for "Best Video". When accepting the award, Sido expressed doubts about the actual quality of his music video and in particular found the co-nominated Black to Blue by Peter Fox to be the better music video. At the same time, however, he emphasized that he deserved the award because of many previous echo-worthy music videos. A little later, Sido announced in an interview that he would consider the video for "Get up again", recorded with Harris as your favorite rapper , as his best music video to date.
It was Sido's first award with an echo. In 2005, however, Thomas D from the hip-hop group Die Fantastischen Vier subsequently passed on the echo award he received with the group to the then aspiring rap star Sido, as he considered him the more deserving prize winner. Overall, Sido had been unsuccessfully nominated for Echo six times in the previous years.
Live performances
On 21 October 2009 Sido joined with the song in the RTL - TV show Willkommen bei Mario Barth on.
As part of Sido's MTV unplugged concert in 2010, which was published under the title MTV Unplugged Live from MV , Sido Hey you! together with the German comedian Kurt Krömer , who took over the chorus. Also in 2010, Kurt Krömer and Sido Hey du! as part of Krömers program Kröm de la Kröm live in the Admiralspalast in Berlin. The performance was published on the DVD of the same name in the same year .
In the summer of 2011 Sido accompanied the comedian Mario Barth on a stadium tour, during which he also performed the song. In addition, Hey you! regular part of his live concerts.
