Jean Muir
Jean Muir Fullarton (born February 13, 1911 in Suffern , New York , † July 23, 1996 in Mesa , Arizona ) was an American actress .
life and career
In 1930 Jean Muir first appeared on Broadway in her hometown of New York. Three years later she signed a contract with Warner Brothers . However, the tall blonde never became a major actress in Hollywood, although she played in leading roles, but mostly in smaller productions. One of the few exceptions was Max Reinhardt 's Shakespeare film A Midsummer Night's Dream , in which she played the role of Helena. Enthusiastic about the acting by debutante Olivia de Havilland in the same film, Muir lost her leading role in Under Jolly Roger. Like many other actresses, she was also considered for the role of Scarlett O'Hara in Gone With the Wind in 1939 . In the same year, Muir was one of the numerous actresses who were traded for the lead role in the planned adaptation of Karl Gustav Vollmoeller's play Das Mirakel by Max Reinhardt. The project was completely discontinued some time later.
In 1938 Muir went back to the theater for a few years and toured with the Group Theater in Clifford Odet's Golden Boy , among others . Unsatisfied with her career, her last film in Hollywood was Love Suffering from 1943. After that film, she returned to Broadway. During the McCarthy era , Jean Muir was blacklisted in 1950 for alleged sympathy for communism , which, among other things, cost her a permanent role in a television series. Muir always denied the allegations. She became an alcoholic in the mid-1950s but was able to overcome her addiction. The actress returned to the stage and made occasional television appearances. Jean Muir ended her active acting career in the mid-1960s and was an acting teacher at Stephens College in Columbia until she retired in 1976 .
In 1960 she divorced her husband, the New York lawyer and television producer Henry Jaffe, with whom she had three children. Jean Muir was 85 years old. It has a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame at 6280 Hollywood Boulevard.
