Escape of the White Stallions (Original title: Miracle of the White Stallions ) is a 1962 film by the Walt Disney studio . Directed by Arthur Hiller . In addition to Robert Taylor , who played the historical figure of the officer Alois Podhajsky , Lilli Palmer and Eddie Albert played the leading roles. The film is about the evacuation of the Lipizzaner stallions from the Spanish Riding School during World War II . Large parts of the film, which was based on the novel by Alois Podhajsky, were shot in the winter riding school and in the stables of the Hermesvilla in Vienna.

During the Second World War , Colonel Alois Podhajsky had to evacuate the valuable Lipizzaner stallions of the Spanish Riding School from Vienna in order to save them from the advancing Soviet troops. Podhajsky knows that the American General Patton has a weakness for horses and could help him. In order to interest him in the school stallions, Podhajsky presented the Spanish Riding School to him in a performance.
