Bill Quinn
William "Bill" Tyrrell Quinn (born May 6, 1912 in New York City , New York , † April 29, 1994 in Camarillo , California ) was an American actor .
Life
Quinn began his vaudeville career as a child and made his Broadway debut under the name "Billy Quinn" at the age of six. In 1924 he also appeared as a child actor in a silent film . Later he was part of the radio ensemble of Orson Welles ' Mercury Theater . After many years in the theater, including many Broadway productions, he moved to Hollywood from the mid-1950s. In 1958 he got the role of bartender Frank Sweeney in the successful western series West of Santa Fé , which he played in 38 episodes until 1963, and through which he brought it to a certain level of prominence among the American television audience.
His film career was less successful. He worked in a number of well-known feature films, including Otto Preminger's drama Storm over Washington , Alfred Hitchcock's thriller The Birds and the literary film adaptation The 27th Floor ; However, his roles were all of a minor nature and sometimes not even mentioned in the credits. His television career went better, however, he had countless guest roles in a wide variety of series formats and was seen in recurring roles in Der Chef , Männerwirtschaft , Owen Marshall - Defense Attorney and Mary Tyler Moore, among others. He had a recurring guest role as Mr. Van Ranseleer on the sitcom All in the Family ; a role that he also played in the spinoff Archie Bunker's Place in 61 episodes. He gave one of his few major feature film roles in 1981 in the horror film Dead & Buried by Dan O'Bannon , alongside Robert Englund . In his last role he introduced the father of Dr. Leonard "Pill" McCoy in Star Trek V: On the Edge of the Universe .
