Hal Smith

Hal Smith (real name: Harold John Smith; born August 24, 1916 in Petoskey, Michigan ; died January 28, 1994 in Santa Monica , California ) was an American actor and voice actor . Smith was best known for his role as Otis Campbell on the Andy Griffith Show and as the voice for Winnie the Pooh .

Life

Harold John Smith was born in Petoskey on August 24, 1916 .

After serving as a singer in various big bands in the 1930s , Smith worked as a radio announcer for KFI in Los Angeles in the 1940s . During this activity he decided to pursue an acting career.

He made his acting debut in 1946 in the western Stars Over Texas , in which Eddie Dean played the lead role. In the 50s and 60s, Smith played many of his roles in western series such as B. Smoking Guns , The People of Shiloh Ranch , The Marshall of Cimarron, or Bonanza . Hal Smith played his best-known role as Otis Campbell , a city-famous drinker, on the Andy Griffith Show .

From the end of the 1950s Smith began to take on speaker or narrative roles in films, television series and also commercials. From 1966 until his death, Smith spoke the owl from Winnie the Pooh , a. a. in the short films Winnie the Pooh and the Honey Tree , Winnie the Pooh and the Blustery Day , with an Oscar Award and The Many Adventures of Winnie the Pooh . He also lent his voice to Winnie the Pooh from 1981 to 1985 .

Hal Smith was married to Louise C. Smith (1916-1992). He died of a heart attack on January 28, 1994 in Santa Monica , California .
