The Smurfs is a US -American Cartoons - TV show that from 1981 to 1989 from the Hanna-Barbera studios for NBC was produced. The series is based on the original artwork The Smurfs by Belgian illustrator Peyo , published in Spirou magazine in 1958 .

content

The Smurfs live in Schlumpfhausen , their hometown in the "Haunted Land". A person can only reach it if a Smurf leads him into the village or the star constellation makes the village visible. Schlumpfhausen is governed as a "Smurfocracy" without any other state organs, the only exceptions are those in which Schlaubi (in a shortened adaptation of the album "Schlumpfissimus, King of the Smurfs" by Peyo) or Smurfette rule alone. As a fatherly leader, Papa Smurf performs a kind of mayor's function and stands out from the other Smurfs with his white beard and red clothing. The remaining Smurfs are beardless and, with the exception of the Smurflings, dressed in white and usually wear a Phrygian cap . The distinctive personalities, however, are optically determined by their ability. Smurfs are always male and are not born but brought by storks (like Baby Smurf). Feminine Smurfs like Smurfette, Granny Smurf and Sassette can only be created through a spell applied to blue clay. While Smurfette and Sassette were created through the spells from Gargamel's book of witches, the origin of Granny Smurf has remained unknown.

Means of locomotion are storks , with which long distances can be traveled. Later, especially the younger Smurfs (“Smurflings”) used the dog “Puppy” as a means of transportation. Most of the Smurfs live in hollowed-out mushrooms that are decorated like houses. They feed on smurfberries (red berries or sarsaparilla ), the seeds of which Traumi and his crew once brought back from a boat trip. The Smurf language is a mixture of original elements and the respective broadcast language, in which the stems of the verbs , nouns and adjectives can be arbitrarily replaced by the stem "Schlumpf" (in other countries, for example, by "pitufo" or "smurf") can. The Smurfs are therefore difficult for humans to understand.

The evil magician Gargamel , who lives with his cat Azrael in a dilapidated hut with a tower, needs a Smurf for a recipe for making gold (up to 6 Smurfs in the further story). So he tries to catch them in order to make gold with them (in the story "Smurf Gold" he succeeds for the first time) or to cook soup. Later Gargamel has an apprentice boy named Snot nose ( Bolvamel ). More rarely appeared other people like the ugly witch Hogatha and her vulture Harold (in the German translation Edgar ) as well as a monster called Nemesis who gives Grandpa Smurf nightmares. This is an evil wizard who wanted to steal their longevity stone from the Smurfs in order to live forever. Other recurring characters are Gargamel's mother and his evil godfather Balthasar as well as the hungry ogre Loudmouth and the sorceress Chlorhydris , who wants to banish love from the world. Father Time and Mother Nature also appear as friends of the Smurfs , who take care of the seasons in the Smurf Forest.

From season 9 there is a new intro and the Smurfs are no longer in the magic forest, but on a journey through time. At first, to bring a little Triceratops back to its time, you can use magic crystals to travel to different time periods and countries, among others. a. to ancient Egypt , to Japan , China , Ireland , to the South Pole and they become shrunken heads for a short time . Sometimes they are also accompanied, e.g. B. from Hermes and his "Peggy" ( Pegasus ). Sometimes anachronism emerges , e.g. B. Torti became a pizza maker in Italy at the time of Julius Caesar , but pizza has only been around since 1889.

characters

Papa Smurf is the head of the village. He was 542 years old last spring. You can recognize him by his white beard and red clothes. He is a wise old Smurf and tries to educate his Smurfs in this way. As an experienced alchemist, he often uses his knowledge to protect the Smurfs from danger. He was once instructed in alchemy by Pallador .

Smurfette was originally created by the terrible wizard Gargamel to bring trouble among the Smurfs. Papa Smurf turns her into Smurfette, who is swarmed by many Smurfs. She can also be completely woman if she plays with the feelings of her darlings.

Brainy is the only Smurf who takes everything seriously. He spends his time preaching to each other and foolishly mumbling ancient quotations. Whatever Papa Smurf says is sacred to him. In addition, Schlaubi is a notorious sneak, which regularly brings him a free flight with a rough head landing.

Hefty is easy to recognize by his heart tattoo on his arm. He keeps himself fit with practically every sport, especially with weights that he constantly lifts. You can always count on him for difficult tasks. He's a bit of a tramp, but he's always helpful.

Clumsy is a walking mishap, and whatever he does, it inevitably turns out to be a disaster. Whether he's trying to hammer a nail, paint a wall, or cook, it always ends in an accident. But he can also be brave and has his heart in the right place. Furthermore, he is the only real friend of Schlaubi, but is always pulled in front of the cart.

Fauli is a Smurf who can just sleep anywhere: in the shade of a mushroom under a wheelbarrow or even on the dam's construction site. Every place is suitable for a little nap. His first thought in the morning is when he can go back to bed. You don't have to call it lazy, but the mere thought of work exhausts Fauli.

Beauty is the Smurf, with a flower on her hat and a hand mirror that cares most about his appearance. Sensitive and sensitive, he spends his time talking about fashion with Smurfette and freshening up his complexion. Should his mirror break, he would be the most unfortunate Smurf there is.

Handy is the Smurf who takes care of everything in Schlumpfhausen. He not only repairs, but also invents many useful machines. A robot, an airplane, a small train and even an apparatus that can smump rain and blue skies. Because he's always busy, you meet him in dungarees with a pen behind his ear. He is in latent athletic competition with Hefty. Since the episode "Handys Liebchen" he tries to get to the mermaid Marina and builds new inventions to be closer to her.

Muffie is always grumpy. He keeps saying: "I hate ..." and getting on the nerves of his friends. It is very rare that he likes something, and then he hates it again. But he has a good heart and can also be friendly, which is particularly reflected in his quasi-paternal relationship with Baby Smurf.

Jokey is a guy who only lives for jokes. This Smurf makes gifts that will fly in your face, provided you are foolish enough to accept them. And that's just one of his countless pranks. The Smurfs are a little angry with him, but deep down they forgive him for his little weakness - especially when one of his pranks backfires. Then the laughs are on their side.

Torti is a Smurf who only thinks about food and also cooks. Accordingly, he wears a white chef's hat and a white apron. His house usually smells of delicious warm rolls, crispy yeast pastries and all kinds of cakes and pies.

Toulousi lives only for his art. His brushes, paints and canvas are his most valuable possessions. He turns them into landscapes, portraits and still lifes. Needless to say, Smurfette is one of his favorite models. Sometimes he tries experimental painting that no one else understands. His name is based on the painter Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec .

Farmi can be recognized by his straw hat and green dungarees. Usually he doesn't care about village life, he prefers the company of salad and vegetables. Sensitive minds should rather ignore Farmis foul sayings, and he always speaks with an accent. In a pumpkin he finds "Wünschel", a genie in a bottle that fulfills his wishes from time to time.

Baby Smurf was brought to the village by a stork one night when the moon was shining blue, no one knows where from. Baby Smurf was immediately adopted by all Smurfs and has completely turned her quiet, humble life inside out - but no one is complaining.

Harmony is a real music fan and loves to play all the instruments he can find. Unfortunately, the only sound he elicits from them is often a deafening noise - to the horror of his companions.

Poeti is out and about with pen and parchment in the village and the surrounding forest, always looking for inspiration. All day long he ponders rhymes in a completely detached manner. For him, Smurfette is a never-ending source of inspiration.

Tarzan Smurf got lost in the forest as a little boy and was called the "Lost Smurf" by Papa Smurf. He was adopted and raised by squirrels. Therefore, his behavior is sometimes a little strange, but explains why he prefers to live in the forest than in the village with the other Smurfs. Tarzan Schlumpf is based on the character of the same name, Edgar Rice Burroughs , this becomes clear when the squirrel was named Cheetah , Naturi can be seen here as "Boy".

Traumi spends his time looking at the stars. His biggest dream: to travel through space and discover many great planets that the Smurfs have never been to. He is also appointed captain when the Smurfs sail to other islands.

Scraper is a Smurf sometimes with a candle on his head or a miner's lamp and a pickaxe in hand. The mining smurf mostly works in a mine near the smurf village and mines ores, flint and rocks as well as sometimes utensils for Papa Schlumpf's experiments in his tunnel. Its name comes from the mining language of Schurf .

Zwirni he is the tailor of the Smurfs. He wears a sewing needle in his hat and a tape measure around his neck. Schlaubi tries to relieve him with a magic needle, but he is indispensable for the Smurf Village, even if he usually stays with his old-fashioned white hats and white smurf pants. Its name comes from Zwirn .

Naturi is one of the smurflings . He loves nature and all of its creatures and you never see him without his loyal companion, a little caterpillar named Papilio. He loves the outdoors so much that he always walks around barefoot.

When he got younger in Father Time's watch, Forschi lost none of his explosive character. You can't tell him anything inappropriate or he'll explode and get terribly angry. He's the drummer in the Smurflings' band and that fits. In the 9th season he is also known as "Schnappi".

Schlaffi is a smurfling . Like the others, he was made a child again in Father Time's clock. Of all the Smurfs, he most often pushes a calm ball. No matter what the situation is: he remains calm. Some even claim he's a little lame ...

Sassette was created when the Smurflings tried to steal the Smurfette recipe, but they can only steal half of the recipe, creating a Smurfette instead of a Smurfette. The reason was that the Smurfette felt so alone and the Smurflings wanted to have a friend by her side. With her braids and dungarees, Sassette is a real tomboy. It uses alliteration , i. H. their words usually begin as follows: “shivering beavers”, “smacking chipmunks”, “sweating swallows” or “suffering amphibian”.

Grandpa Smurf is so old, nobody knows his real age. He was the head of the village before Papa Smurf. 500 years ago he left the village on a very important mission: in search of the four elements that charge the stone of eternal life for the Smurfs.

For a long time, Nanny Schlumpf was trapped in a magic castle (Schloss Knastburg) that only appears every 500 years and captures carefree travelers. Grandpa Smurf and a handful of brave Smurfs finally managed to free them from the castle ban. Her constant companion - Hopsa (also called Schmusi) can escape. In the 9th season Schmusi finds a village in Australia with the plush bears of his species, but he stays with the Smurfs.

Clocki was originally built by Handy to help him with all of his tedious work. However, he is more than a robot to most Smurfs because one day he learned to think for himself by accident. He brings King Gerard back to the throne and remains there as a little helper. He soon feels lonely, however, because the king and prince get a wife - Handy builds for him the wind-up Smurfette, after she didn't get cellphone's love, they both now live together in Gerads Castle.

Curiosity created the first newspaper called "Schlumpfzeitung" in Schlumpfhausen. Unfortunately, he soon turned to tabloid journalism and urged Smurfette to make details of her private life public. In the end he noticed his mistake and wrote interesting and sophisticated articles again. In one episode he is referred to as Springerli, an allusion to Axel Springer .

Schnuffi is the only one wearing a red feather on his hat. He helps u. a. Torti in his diet and resembles a Boy Scout Smurf.

Gimpli cannot say "no" and this is often taken advantage of by the Smurfs.

Fearchti is afraid of everything and everyone, even his own shadow.

Schwächli lacks self-confidence and does not trust himself, only after Papa Smurf gives him the "Kannes-Make-Cream" cream, which turns out to be Smurfberry jam, he gains self-confidence.

Pfuschi can't make up his mind and finds his place among the Smurfs difficult, after all he wants to become a Doctor Smurf and helps the Smurfs a lot with it.

Architekti designs the mushroom houses in the Schlumpfdorf (together with Handy), but sometimes he also dares to create more unusual constructions, such as the Schlumpf high-rise "Schlumpfonium". He is thus the architect of the Smurf Village.

Timberli is a woodcutter smurf who only appears from the 7th season. It was named after the English word "Timber" ([construction] wood, at the same time warning call for American lumberjacks).

Other characters (not Smurfs):

Gargamel is an evil, devious and hypocritical wizard who lives in a hideous hut in the middle of the forest. He hates the Smurfs and will do everything in his power to catch them. Fortunately for them, he is also very stupid, so that so far they have always been able to escape him. But caution is advised because he has sworn revenge.

Azrael is Gargamel's cat and scapegoat. He follows the wizard everywhere, always in the hope that his master will catch a tasty smurf for him and throw it to eat. But that has never happened because he's just as stupid as Gargamel. Still, it is a constant threat to any Smurf approaching the Gargamel hut.

Snotty nose  is one of the main villains, who made his first appearance in the Smurfs cartoon in season 6 "The Enchanted Feather" and is there until the 8th season. He is a vicious child who always caused trouble for his teachers at the wizarding school, which is why they decided to hand him on to his uncle  Gargamel  as an assistant. The relationship between the two can be described as "strained". Even if he occasionally supports Gargamel in his plans to catch the Smurfs, Snot-Nose prefers to pass the time with other things.

Hogatha is an ugly witch studded with warts. Her vulture Harold often accompanies her. She can also transform herself into a Smurf and deceive the Smurfs with it, only she cannot bewitch a small blue tail. Her target is the Smurfs, as she hopes that a Smurf will improve the skin's beauty.

Chlorhydris is another ugly witch who appears for the first time in Season 2 of "My Smurfy Valentine's Day". Her hair is covered by a hood, so far it has never been recognized what hair she has. She has a daughter, Priscilla, a talking toucan and a bat. Chlorhydri's main goal is to create a world without love.

Nemesis doesn't appear until season 8 and is a troll-like ugly creature who hides his body under a hooded coat. He was once human, but was tricked from Grandpa Smurf into these ugly creatures and has been looking for Grandpa Smurf and the Longevity Stone ever since. Hence named after the goddess of revenge, Nemesis .

Mother Nature is an old woman who lives in a castle deep in the forest. She is closely related to the Smurfs and nature. She is responsible for the change of seasons and therefore has a wide variety of wands, which may only be used by others in exceptional cases, as they can also cause harm.

Cupid is an older little man with wings. His name is the Roman variant of Amor , just like him he can take love arrows out of his quiver and shoot them.

Federchen is a white stork . He is a good friend of the Smurfs and brings newborn Baby Smurfs, including the current Baby Smurf. With the help of feathers, long distances can be covered on his back. Feather also helps in emergency situations, e.g. B. against the howling bird.

Homnibus is an old wizard with a long beard and a purple cloak. He is friends with Papa Smurf, with whom he plays chess. He is one of the first characters, as he already appears in the comics by Johann and Pfiffikus and can bring the two of them to the Smurfs' Village with one magic spell in The Smurfs and the Magic Flute . The orphan Justin will shortly be his foster son.

Episode list

synchronization

Between 1983 and 1984, 52 episodes of the Smurf series were broadcast on ZDF , directed by Rudolf Krause . After two seasons, the series was discontinued and taken over by Tele 5 . There was a new synchronization and a new setting of the opening credits by Eberhard Cronshagen . The Tele5 synchronization corresponds to today's known, while the old ZDF synchronization has largely been forgotten. The Planet Wave Studios in Hamburg, which also dubbed most of the old Tele-5 cartoons, were responsible for this better-known version . Many well-known speakers (Helmut Zierl, Andreas von der Meden, Kurt Goldstein, Gottfried Kramer, Jens Wawrczeck) lent characters from the Smurfs their voices, in contrast to the original, in which a speaker often took on different voices. Also noteworthy is the almost complete lack of the Smurfs language (“Schlumpfen”, “Schlumpfig”) in favor of a neutral Standard German and - compared to the original and the ZDF version - only marginal pitching of the voices so that the voices are not particularly alienated Act. While the synchronization can be described as quite successful, the translations of the episode titles are sometimes a bit confusing, because the titles have been translated literally, which does not always make sense and is completely wrong at least in one case.

Further films

The first film adaptation of the comic was the Belgian animated series From the life of the Schlumpfe ( Les aventures des Schtroumpfs ), which was also shown on German and Austrian television at the end of the 1960s. A film cut from 5 episodes was released in Belgian cinemas in 1965.

In 1976, the Belgian film production The Smurfs and the Magic Flute followed , which was also released in Germany and Austria.

In August 2011, the 3D film The Smurfs was released worldwide, in which the computer-animated Smurfs move into real New York of the 21st century. The plot of the sequel The Smurfs 2 (2013) takes place in Paris . The Smurfs - The Lost Village was made in
2017 , which differs from the other two 3D films and is reminiscent of that world of Peyo.
