Johann and Pfiffikus (French: Johan et Pirlouit , also translated as Prinz Edelhart and Kukuruz in older German magazines by the comic publisher Rolf Kauka ) are the title characters of a medieval comic series by the Belgian illustrator Peyo (Pierre Culliford, 1928–1992). The series was remembered not least because of the introduction of the Smurfs , initially as secondary characters.

Publishing history in Belgium and France

Johann had his first appearance on April 11, 1946 in a wordless strip in the Belgian newspaper La Dernière Heure . More strips followed and, in 1947, two shorter sequels. Two more short sequels were created for the newspaper Le Soir in 1951/52, the first of which was a remake of the second from La Dernière Heure . With an album-long and first colored sequel story, the series finally debuted on September 11, 1952 in Spirou magazine . From 1954 the adventures appeared in album format, first as Une Aventure de Johan , Volume 4 as Une Aventure de Johan et Pirlouit , from Volume 5 as Johan et Pirlouit . After the great success of the secondary characters The Smurfs (French: Les Schtroumpfs ), Peyo created their own series and stopped working on Johann and Pfiffikus in 1970 (a three-pager with Pfiffikus followed in 1977). Only since Peyo's death († 1992) has the series of Peyo's son Thierry Culliford (* 1955) with Yvan Delporte (1927–2007), Alain Maury (* 1958) and Luc Parthoens (* 1964) in the Studio Peyo been continued.

main characters

The action takes place at a royal court in a romanticized fantasy knighthood. In this world magic and sorcery are nothing unusual; the medieval world is rounded off by real elements such as Vikings, Mongols and Crusaders.

Johann (Fr. Johan , at Kauka: Prince Edelhart ) is a noble boy (Fr. Page ) at the court of a king. In La Dernière Heure his appearance had nothing in common with the later hero, in Le Soir he came much closer to him in terms of hairstyle and stature, but it was only in Spirou that he got his hair color. Johann is in the service of a king (French: Le Roi) who is not identified by name and who was his master in some of the earliest gags of 1946. He takes on many tasks for him: spy in an enemy castle, royal messenger, companion of escorts - nothing scares the fearless adventurer with a knightly heart. The reader does not learn anything about his family background. In 1954 he found a loyal friend and companion in the third album- long story ( Le Lutin du bois aux roches , Eng . The Kobold from the Rock Forest ) in Pfiffikus. As a page and squire, Johann is experienced in combat, trained with swords and a skilled rider. His wealth of ideas saves him and his companions from some difficult situations.

Pfiffikus (French: Pirlouit , Kauka: Kukuruz ) is a short guy who, after a difficult childhood and a lot of jokes through Johann, finds a permanent home in the royal palace and a job as a court jester. He is a connoisseur: he likes to sleep late, eats excessively, drinks to the point of drunkenness and believes in his talent as a musician. Again and again he tries his hand at being a sorcerer's apprentice, and he even succeeds in making a philosopher's stone that can turn gold into lead ( Le sortilège du Maltrochu , dt. "The magic of Schwarzenfels"). Even if his music annoys all bystanders, he shows himself in the adventure as a courageous warrior who stands by his friend and supports him as far as he can. Pfiffikus usually wears a red fez without a tassel as headgear , which underlines its exotic background.

In the black goat Ricki or Lottemie (French: Biquette ; Kauka: Ricki ), Pfiffikus has an unusual mount and a strong comrade who always takes bad guys by the horns.

The magician Omnibus (French: Homnibus ) lives with his assistant Oliver (French: Olivier ) in a detached house a little away from the royal palace . Johann and Pfiffikus met him in 1955 in the fourth album-long story La Pierre de Lune (Eng. The Philosopher's Stone ) as a world-stranger, choleric scholar, but later appreciated him as an important advisor in matters of magic. In La flute à six trous in 1958, Omnibus established the connection to the Cursed Land for the two adventurers in order to uncover the secret of the Magic Flute.

In 1958, in their ninth long adventure, Johann and Pfiffikus met a group of little blue pixies in white tights with white pointed caps , who speak an unusual language: the helpful Smurfs (French: Les Schtroumpfs ) live in a village with houses made of mushrooms. Their fatherly leader is the Great Smurf , who is the only one who wears red clothes and appears with a flowing beard. The Smurfs travel on storks to the knightly world of Johann and Pfiffikus to help them on some adventures. The little gnomes are so popular from the start that they quickly get their own mini-series.

Publications in Germany

In Germany, the series appeared for the first time from 1968 under the title Prinz Edelhart und Kukuruz in the Fix and Foxi books and other publications of the Kauka publishing house.

In 1979, Carlsen Verlag began publishing the series under the title Johann und Pfiffikus in hand-lettered albums. The publisher released two series of albums one after the other that did not have the same number. From 1979 to 1987 eleven volumes were published, from 1994 to 2002 the complete series as 13 albums and four Classics volumes . In addition to the softcover edition, there is also a hardcover edition for libraries for the second row.

In 2011/12 Toonfish Verlag published all album - length adventures and short stories in a five-volume complete edition.

Merchandising

In 1959, Dupuis created a Pfiffikus figure for the first time, which was followed a few years later by a Johann figure. In the 1970s, the companies Bully and Schleich brought out Johann and Pfiffikus figures in their series of Schlumpf figures, such as B. Pfiffikus (1974), Bully order number 20499. In 1991 a pin with Johann and Pfiffikus appeared.

Film adaptations

  • The Smurfs and the Magic Flute ( La Flûte à six schtroumpfs , France 1976). Cartoon based on the comic album of the same name. The scriptwriter was Yvan Delporte. The German cinema premiere took place on October 7, 1976.
  • Johann and Peewit in Schlumpfhausen (USA 1981–1990)

Pro7 broadcast the 16 episodes of the animated series The Smurfs by Hanna Barbera Studios as its own TV series "Johann and Peewit in Schlumpfhausen" (first broadcast on Pro7, November 25, 1995 to March 16, 1996, each Saturday 8:30). The intro of the television series The Smurfs served as the opening credits . These episodes were also broadcast as an independent series in other countries, including France and the Netherlands, but with their own opening credits with a theme song.

Johann and Pfiffikus in other comics

In Peyo's comic series Benni Bärenstark Johann has two guest appearances without being mentioned by name: In the 8th album Hold-up sur pellicule ( Eng.Benni's big appearance ), Johann checks into a luxury hotel (p. 26, panel 3, picture 2 and 3 ). In the 9th album L'île de la desunion ( Eng . Benni matters ) Johann can be seen in a newspaper article with a picture (p. 21, panel 1, picture 2).
