Crater and lagoon

Volcanic crater and lagoon near El Golfo

One of the most famous sights of the island of Lanzarote is located south of the former fishing village of El Golfo . It is the crater of the volcano Montaña de Golfo , partially sunk in the sea , in which a lagoon has formed, which is about 50 meters from the coast. The distinctive green color of the lagoon is caused by single-celled algae that have adapted to the high salt content of the lake. Seawater flows into the lagoon through underground connections to the sea and ensures constant balance. This balance of nature has been disturbed for some years for unknown reasons. The green lagoon, which has now been closed off, is evaporating more and more and is now only a fraction of its original size. The crater lake is called Charco Verde (green pond) or Charco de los Clicos . The latter name comes from an edible type of seafood, the clicos , which used to be found in abundance in this place.

The volcanic crater is a rare example of hydrovolcanism that occurs mostly on the coast. When magma and water meet, a phreatomagmatic explosion creates a tuff ring as shown here. The crater can be seen particularly well from the viewing platform on the south side of the village. The open semicircle of the crater also forms a bay open to the sea with black lava sand, in which you can find transparent, light green olivine , a mineral from the earth's mantle , from which gemstones are also made.
