Bert Rickard Johannes Bolin ( pronunciation : [ ˌbæʈː bʊˈliːn ], born March 15, 1925 in Nyköping , † December 30, 2007 in Österåker near Stockholm ) was a Swedish meteorologist and climate researcher .

life and work

Bolin graduated from Stockholm University with a degree in meteorology in 1956 with a dissertation. From 1961 to 1990 he was a professor at the same university. He made a name for himself in the fields of dynamic and chemical meteorology, investigated the effects of greenhouse gases , especially carbon dioxide , on the atmosphere and was considered early on in his home country as the “nestor of climate research”.

In 1988 Bolin was one of the founders of the United Nations Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change and served as its first chairman between 1988 and 1997. Al Gore , who shared the 2007 Nobel Peace Prize with the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change, said Bolin did a lot to understand the growing threat posed by climate change . John Houghton , director of the British Met Office until 1991 and first head of Working Group I of the IPCC, described Bolin as an obvious choice for chairing the panel, both because of his influence and reputation as a scientist, his contagious enthusiasm and his political and diplomatic skills Experience.

Since 1994 Bolin was a foreign member of the Russian Academy of Sciences , since 1997 of the National Academy of Sciences .

Awards

Bolin has received several awards for his work. He received the Carl-Gustaf Rossby Research Medal in 1984 and the Tyler Prize for Environmental Achievement in 1988 . In 1995 he was awarded the Japanese Blue Planet Prize , the world's most important award for merit in environmental science.
