Hoesung Lee , also Hoe-sŏng Yi, (born December 31, 1945 in Yesan, Chungcheongnam-do Province , South Korea ) is a South Korean economist and professor at the Graduate School for Energy, Environmental policy and Technology ) from Korea University in Seoul. Lee has been chairman of the IPCC Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change since October 2015 .

life and work

Hoesung Lee was born on December 31, 1945 in the South Korean province of Chungcheongnam-do. He earned a bachelor's degree in economics from Seoul National University , South Korea, in 1969 , and graduated with a Ph.D. in 1975. in economics at Rutgers University , USA.

From 1975 to 1978 he worked as an economist in strategy development and corporate planning at Exxon . He then spent three years as a Senior Fellow at the Korea Development Institute , an institute for economic policy analysis set up by the South Korean government. He was director of the Korea Energy Economics Institute (KEEI) from its founding in 1986 to 1995. From 2003 to 2011 he taught as a professor and was dean of the College of Environment at Keimyung University, Daegu .

The focus of his economic work was energy economics and climate economics , with a focus on East Asia and especially South Korea.

He was a member of numerous committees of private and government organizations, such as the Hyundai Group , the Pacific Northwest National Laboratory , a US research institution for energy and national security, the Institute for Global Environmental Strategies , an institute for global environmental strategies in Japan, and advisor to the South Korean Environment Minister. In 1999 he was President of the International Association for Energy Economics (IAEE).

In 2015, Lee is a member of the council of the Global Green Growth Institute (GGGI), the Asian Development Bank and the South Korean Ministry of the Environment . He is also a professor at Korea University .

Hoesung Lee is the younger brother of former South Korean Prime Minister Lee Hoi-chang .

IPCC

Since 1992, four years after the establishment of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC), Lee has worked for it in various positions. He coordinated the work of Working Group III for the Second Assessment Report of the IPCC on the Economic and Social Dimensions of Current Climate Change . For the third , fourth and fifth assessment reports of the IPCC he was one of the main authors, reviewers and editors.

From 2008 to 2015 he was Vice-Chairman of the IPCC. In October 2015, Lee was elected Chairman of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change as the successor to Rajendra Pachauri, who resigned in February of the same year .
