Jayne Svenungsson

Jayne Christine Svenungsson (born December 9, 1973 in Trollhättan , Älvsborgs län ) is a Swedish theologian , professor of systematic theology at Lund University and author of specialist books.

Life

Svenungsson studied religion , linguistics and the history of ideas at the University of Gothenburg and graduated in 1998 with a Master of Arts in religion. In the same year she completed a Bachelor of Arts degree in theology at the same university and began researching as a doctoral student in systematic theology under Professor Werner G. Jeanrond at the Faculty of Theology at Lund University. In 2002 she received her doctorate there with the thesis The Return of God: A Study of the Concept of God in Postmodern Philosophy . In 2011 she worked as a lecturer in systematic theology at Uppsala University and from 2014 at the Stockholm University of Theology in this very field. Since 2015 she has been professor of systematic theology and philosophy of religion at Lund University.

In 2004, in her dissertation, she dealt with the philosophical debate about the concept of God within French phenomenology, which emerged again in the 1990s, from the perspective of the history of ideas . In her research, Svenungsson focuses on historical-philosophical and historical-theological questions as well as on political philosophy and theology. She deals extensively with various aspects of Jewish philosophy and critical analyzes of anti-Jewish stereotypes within Christian theology. In 2014, a comprehensive study was published under the Swedish title Den gudomliga historien: profetism, messianism och andens utveckling , which was also published in English in 2016. The author also publishes essays in various Swedish daily newspapers.

On September 28, 2017, she was elected a member of the Swedish Academy in chair number 9 , where she succeeded Torgny Lindgren . On November 7, 2018, after less than a year of membership, she applied to leave the academy because she did not agree with the decision of the other academy members to ask Katarina Frostenson to leave. The exit was approved on November 9, 2018.

Svenungsson lives in Lund and Stockholm .
