Johannes Vogel (diplomat)

Johannes Vogel (born February 25, 1928 ; † March 16, 2017 in Pirna ) was a German diplomat . He was the GDR's ambassador to Ghana , Liberia and Mozambique .

Life

Vogel was born into a working class family. He attended business school. From 1950 to 1952 he studied at the German Administrative Academy in Forst Zinna , graduating with a degree in political science and law. From 1957 to 1963 he was deputy chairman, then until 1965 chairman of the council of the Pirna district .

Between 1965 and 1967 he completed additional studies in territorial economics at the Humboldt University in Berlin . In 1968 he joined the diplomatic service of the GDR and became an employee of the Ministry for Foreign Affairs of the GDR (MfAA). In 1969/70 he worked as an attaché at the embassy of the GDR in the People's Democratic Republic of Yemen . From 1971 to 1973, Vogel headed the trade agency as legation councilor and was the GDR's ambassador in Accra (Ghana) from April 1973 to June 1975 . 1974/75 he was also ambassador to Liberia. From June 1975 to September 1978 and again from March 1981 to December 1983 he was the GDR's ambassador in Maputo ( People's Republic of Mozambique ). From 1978 to 1981 and from 1984 to 1990 he was sector manager in the East and Central Africa department at the MfAA.

Vogel was a member of the SED .
