Alain Fuchs (born April 10, 1953 in Lausanne ) is a French chemist and science manager. From 2010 to 2017 he was chairman of the national research organization Center national de la recherche scientifique (CNRS).

Career

Fuchs first studied at the École polytechnique fédérale de Lausanne . He did his doctoral thesis at the University of Paris-Süd in Orsay , where he received his doctorate in natural sciences in 1983.

In 1995 he became a professor at the same university and headed the Laboratory for Physical Chemistry of Amorphous Materials there from 1997 to 2000. He then became the founding director of the University's Physical Chemistry Laboratory, which he headed until 2006. In 1999 he was visiting professor at the University of California .

From 1997 onwards he held leading positions in various committees of the CNRS. On January 20, 2010 he was appointed chairman of the organization by the French government. His appointment was also perceived with interest in the media, as he was considered rather unknown in science policy and his profile for the post was considered "atypical". By resolution of the Council of Ministers on February 26, 2014, his mandate was renewed.

Services

Fuchs' research area is the modeling and molecular simulation of enclosed liquids. His work led to numerous collaborations with industrial partners.

As chairman of the CNRS, since the beginning of his term of office, Fuchs has been campaigning for closer cooperation between his institution and the French universities and for the creation of large university structures with dimensions that are competitive at international level.

Fuchs is a Fellow of the Royal Society of Chemistry and a member of the Academia Europaea . He has also been a knight ( chevalier ) des Ordre des Palmes Académiques since 1996 , knight of the Legion of Honor since 2010 and an officer of the Ordre national du Mérite and Ordre national du Québec since 2014 .
