biography

Janov studied at the University of California, Los Angeles and a Ph.D. in Claremont at the Graduate School in Sozialpsychiatrischer work . He worked for a few years as a Freudian psychotherapist , from 1952 to 1967 in his private practice. He gained public interest with his book Der Urschrei ( The Primal Scream ). In it he described the phenomenon of catastrophic early childhood experiences and experiences, which he referred to as primal pain (German: " primal pain "). In his books Janov describes his development of primary therapy (ger .: Primal Therapy ) as the only effective psychotherapy. In his opinion, only psychotherapies that take into account the psychophysical connections of so-called mental illnesses and allow deep feelings can bring about permanent and measurable changes in behavior. According to Janov, pain from early childhood is not only the basis for psychological, but also physical illness. Janov dealt with researching and analyzing primal pain in the psychotherapeutic environment of neuroses and psychoses.

He gave lectures, trained students and published about the primary therapy he had developed. Since 1989, together with his second wife, France Janov, he has directed his second institute (The Janov Primal Center) in Santa Monica ( California , USA ). The original institute he founded with his first wife Vivian Janov will be continued by her. Janov died on October 1, 2017 at the age of 93.
