Ramesh Mishra (musician)

Ramesh Mishra (born October 2, 1948 in Varanasi , † March 13, 2017 in New York City ) was an Indian sarangi player.

The son Ramnath Mishras received his first music lessons from his father and continued his education with Hanuman Prasad Mishra and Gopal Mishra . Eventually he became a student of Ravi Shankar . In 1959 Jawaharlal Nehru sent him to Pakistan with a cultural delegation. He has performed internationally both as a soloist and as an accompanist for other musicians. Among other things he was involved in Ravi Shankar's album in Kremlin Live and Ali Akbar Khan's Grammy nominated album Legacy with. On the album of the band Aerosmith Nine Lives (1997) he played the intro to the song Taste of India on the sarangi . Other musical partners included Zakir Bhai , Subhen Chatterjee and Girija Devi . In 2008 he was awarded the Sangeet Natak Akademi Award . Mishra died of cancer in 2017 in New York.
