We're sick of it! is a movement of farmers, environment, nature and animal welfare organizations against the agricultural industry , against intensive farming and for a change in agriculture . The largest demonstration has taken place every January since 2011 on the occasion of Green Week in Berlin.

The protest events are jointly supported by 46 organizations. These include: Association for the Environment and Nature Conservation Germany , Working Group on Rural Agriculture , Nature Conservation Association Germany , Bread for the World , Demeter , INKOTA-netzwerk , Misereor , Oxfam , Slow Food Germany . 67 other organizations are named as supporters. The joint website of the organizers is the responsibility of the Meine Landwirtschaft campaign , which is a project of the Environment and Development Forum under the legal sponsorship of the German Nature Protection Ring.

Protest and demands

The demands of the demonstrators are broad. In general, the protest is directed against the negative consequences of "agro-industrial mass production for farmers, consumers, animals and the environment."

The organizers demand:

  • Right to Food Worldwide
  • Healthy and affordable food for everyone
  • Fair prices and market rules for the farmers
  • Animal welfare without misuse of antibiotics
  • Freedom for the variety of seeds
  • Bee and environmentally friendly agriculture
  • Promotion of regional feed production
  • Access to land worldwide for everyone

The demonstration in January is always embedded in a protest weekend. On the evening before, a “Schnippeldisko” has been taking place since 2012, during which rejects (so-called knobby vegetables ) are transformed into “protest soup ” as part of a hybrid event . Before the opening rally, a “farmer's breakfast” and a tractor parade to the location of the opening rally took place in some years. After the rally, a “political soup pot” was invited to the premises of the Heinrich Böll Foundation in some years . Lectures and discussions on nutritional issues were held there; the food prepared at the “Schnippeldisko” was served against a donation.
Before the demonstration in January 2013, the meat atlas appeared for the first time ; In 2014, 2016 and 2018 further editions were published in large numbers and in several languages.

2011

Berlin: On January 22nd, 2011 several thousand people (15,000 participants according to the police, 20,000 according to the organizers) demonstrated for a reform of agricultural policy, a move away from industrialized agriculture and better consumer protection . The motto of the demonstration was we are fed up with it - no to genetic engineering, animal factories and dumping exports .

2012

Berlin: On January 21, 2012, several thousand people demonstrated in Berlin (23,000 according to the organizers). The demonstration took place at the same time as a summit meeting of agriculture ministers from 70 countries.

Hanover: In November 2000 people demonstrated under the motto “We're sick of it! Citizens and farmers for a new, fair agricultural policy in Lower Saxony ”.

2013

Berlin: On January 19, 2013, thousands of people (25,000 participants according to the organizers, the police did not provide any information) called under the motto We're fed up! Enjoy your meal. Good farming. Now! fundamental reforms in agricultural policy . The demonstration took place in parallel to a meeting of 80 agriculture ministers. According to BUND and NABU, the protest was accompanied by 70 tractors.

Munich: According to the organizer and the police, 8,000 people demonstrated on July 13, 2013 in Munich under the motto “I'm sick of me”.

Wietze: On August 31, 2013, according to the organizer, 7,000 people and, according to the police, around 6,500 people demonstrated against the largest poultry slaughterhouse in Europe in Wietze, Lower Saxony . The slaughterhouse was surrounded by a human chain. The demonstrators called for a fundamental change in agriculture . The event took place under the motto We're sick of agribusiness! instead of. Lower Saxony's Agriculture Minister Christian Meyer attended the event.

2014

Berlin: The campaign for the demonstration began on January 15th with the action "We let the pig out ... in front of the Chancellery in Berlin!", During which a herd of protest-experienced Swabian-Halli country pigs was driven in front of the Chancellery in Berlin.

On January 18, 2014, the fourth We are fed up with it! - Demonstration themed We're fed up with agribusiness! Enjoy your meal. Good farming. For all! instead, to which a broad spectrum of organizations, associations, parties, producers and companies had called for support. According to the organizer, 30,000 people followed the call.

Haßleben : More than a thousand people demonstrated on June 29, 2014 against the planned construction of a megastall for 36,000 pigs.

Berlin: The first We're fed up with it took place from October 2nd to 5th, 2014.

Berlin: On January 17, 2015 tens of thousands of people (50,000 participants according to the organizers, 20,000 participants and 25,000 participants according to the police) called for the slogan “Stop animal factories, genetic engineering and TTIP . The demonstration took place parallel to the Global Forum for Food and Agriculture (GFFA) and the 8th Berlin Agriculture Ministers' Summit.

2016

Berlin: On January 16, 2016, thousands of people (23,000 participants and 130 tractors according to the organizers, 13,500 participants according to the police) demanded under the motto We're fed up with agricultural industry! No future without farmers fundamental reforms in agricultural policy. The demonstration moved from Potsdamer Platz past the Bundesrat, the Federal Ministry of Food and Agriculture and the Bundestag to the Federal Chancellery. At the same time, the Global Forum for Food and Agriculture (GFFA) took place at the Federal Foreign Office.

2017

Berlin : More than 10,000 people demonstrated on January 21, 2017 for a reorientation of agriculture and against the agricultural industry. The organizers counted around 18,000 participants who moved with a convoy of 130 tractors at the head from Potsdamer Platz to the Brandenburg Gate.

2018

Berlin : On January 20, 2018, tens of thousands of people, including numerous farmers from all over Germany (33,000 participants and 160 farmers with their tractors according to the organizers, tens of thousands of participants according to the police), demanded under the motto “Stand up to the agricultural industry ! ”Fundamental reforms in agricultural policy. In particular, the demonstration alliance called for the next federal government to "turn away from the aggressive export orientation of the agricultural policy that is driving farms worldwide into ruin." Agriculture Ministers' Conference took place as part of the Global Forum for Food and Agriculture (GFFA). A protest note was given to the 70 ministers gathered from all over the world. The demonstration continued through the government district to Straße des 17. Juni with the goal of the Brandenburg Gate, where the final rally took place.

2019

Berlin : On January 19, 2019, thousands demonstrated at the ninth nationwide demonstration of the action alliance We're fed up! for climate-friendly agriculture, for a change in agricultural policy and against the industrial production of food. The organizers spoke of 35,000, the police of tens of thousands of participants. This time many farmers were represented, u. a. by the working group of rural agriculture and several organic farmers' associations. The demonstration was led by around 170 farmers in tractors.

2020

Berlin : On January 18, 2020, according to the organizers, 27,000 people demonstrated under the motto “Tackle the agricultural transition, protect the climate!” For more nature conservation and against factory farming. Around 170 farmers also set out with their tractors to join the protest and lead the protest march. The day before, land creates connection with over 400 tractors demonstrated , but against tougher environmental protection laws.

Events in Amsterdam

Inspired by the protests in Berlin, demonstrations took place in Amsterdam in 2012 and 2013 under the motto “we zijn het MEGA zat”. This can be translated both with We are fed up with MEGA and with We are fed up with MEGA . This play on words is intended to indicate the demonstrators' rejection of ever larger stalls and intensification of livestock farming . The event was organized and supported by some Dutch associations and parties ( PvDA , SP , Partij voor de Dieren ). The Dutch events are independent of the events in Germany.

Austria

In March 2012, organizations in Austria from the fields of the environment, agriculture and social affairs joined forces as a platform We're fed up! together to work together for a new agricultural and food policy.

In September 2012, a “rural protest picnic” was organized in the Votive Park in Vienna as the final event of the “Good Food March”.

Counter-demonstrations

Under the motto We'll fill you up! In January 2015, a counter-demonstration supported by the farmers' association took place in front of Berlin Central Station , in which, according to the police, around 550 people took part. According to the police, around 500 supporters of conventional agriculture gathered at the main train station in 2016 to defend themselves against criticism from animal protection associations and nature conservation organizations. Around 700 people and 50 tractors gathered at Berlin Central Station in 2017 for a counter-demonstration. The counter-demonstration was canceled in 2018; on the website of the initiative "We'll fill you up!" instead became a nationwide day of action under the motto "Germany is blooming!" called. In 2019, on January 18, around 150 farmers gathered for the counter demonstration “We'll make you full” with a huge pesticide spray in front of the Brandenburg Gate.
