Cholo Brenes

Rafael Andrés Brenes Guridi (born October 16, 1942 - † July 3, 2017 in Santo Domingo ), known as Cholo Brenes , was a Dominican music promoter, lawyer, political scientist, sociologist and columnist.

Brenes studied law at the Universidad Autónoma de Santo Domingo and political science in England, Spain and Chile. In 1973 he returned from Chile to the Dominican Republic, where he got to know socially critical songs through Ramón Leonardo . His group Expresión Joven (with Puro Eduardo López , Manuel de Jesús and Chico González ) was the first that he supervised as a promoter and manager. Authorized by President Joaquín Balaguer , he was the manager of the festival of protest music 7 Días con el Pueblo in 1974 .

The Dominican musicians whose careers he promoted include Fernando Villalona , Wilfrido Vargas , Sergio Vargas , Watson Brazobán , Sonia Silvestre , Los Hijos del Rey , Ilegales , Ciudad de Ángeles and Negros y Ópalo . Until shortly before his death he published columns in El Nacional on Latin American music. He gave sociology lectures at the Universidad Autónoma de Santo Domingo . Brenes died in 2017 of complications from diabetes.
