Wolfgang Schreyer (born November 20, 1927 in Magdeburg ; † November 14, 2017 in Ahrenshoop ) was a German writer .

Life

Wolfgang Schreyer was the son of a chemist . He attended high school and was deployed as an anti-aircraft helper in the final stages of World War II . In 1944 he joined the NSDAP and served in the Wehrmacht until the end of the war . He became an American prisoner of war , from which he was released in 1946. From 1947 to 1949 he completed an apprenticeship as a pharmacist and then practiced this profession until 1950. From 1950 to 1952 he was managing director of a plant in the pharmaceutical industry . He has been a freelance writer since his debut novel Großgarage Südwest was published. Numerous trips took him mainly to the Caribbean and the USA . Since 1958, Schreyer has been under observation by the GDR State Security Service several times for a long time . Schreyer lived in Magdeburg until 1972; after that he was based in Ahrenshoop in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania until his death in November 2017 .

Wolfgang Schreyer is the author of an extensive narrative work, which is largely attributed to entertainment literature, but has strongly socially critical features. Schreyer's novels, set in Central America and the Caribbean , were particularly successful , in which the author skilfully mixed fiction and documentary . In addition, he wrote detective novels , a science fiction novel, film and television scripts and radio plays . With a total circulation of more than five million copies, Schreyer is one of the most successful authors of GDR literature . Several of his novels were made into films by DEFA .

Wolfgang Schreyer had been a member of the GDR Writers' Association since 1952 and of the GDR PEN Center since 1974 ; later the PEN Center Germany . Since 1990 he has been a member of the Association of German Writers . In 1956 he received the Heinrich Mann Prize .
